Buckeye Meltdown...

This afternoon, I decided to give candy-making a shot. And what better candy to start with than the buckeye? (Plus, I'm supposed to bring Christmas cookies to our small group Christmas party in a few weeks, and I want to put some homemade buckeyes on there - show these Cheeseheads what Ohio's all about - and I wanted to do a practice round!)
It was a mess. I think I'm going to have to bring out the big guns and call my Grandma before attempting the next batch. These have to be the ugliest buckeyes known to man. The first ones were too small, the last ones too big (probably because I was sick of rolling peanut butter balls), I couldn't seem to get them evenly covered in chocolate, and, worst of all, they wouldn't stay on the toothpicks while i was dipping them! They'd either fall into the chocolate (requiring me to fish them out with a fork!) or the toothpick would dig a giant hole in the middle.
Like I said, they were ugly. And poor Andy got home in the middle of it! He sees that I'm frustrated and tries to console me: "No, honey, they look fine! Just like buckeyes! I knew right away what they were!" It was sweet of him, but I know what I'm looking at! An embarrassment to the state of Ohio, candy-making and my Grandmother! (OK, I might be exaggerating here, but you get the picture...)
On the plus side, they do taste just like a buckeye. Maybe beauty's in the eye (or mouth) of the beholder.
