BREAKING NEWS! Favre to retire!

Posted Tuesday, March 04, 2008 3:56 PM

Or, at least that's what EVERY media outlet up here is reporting. (I know, I haven't blogged in ages, and this is what I come back with? More interesting posts to come later...)

I can't wait to see the fallout from this. I love football just as much (if not more) than the next guy, and yes, the guy's a good QB, but the hero-worship of Favre here is a little ridiculous. I'm half expecting to find flags at half-staff here. And maybe I'm being a little unsympathetic here - but does this story warrant its own news ticker on the bottom of the screen? And a "we interrupt your regularly scheduled program to bring you breaking news"? Isn't that reserved for emergencies?

(Maybe my lack of sympathy stems from the fact that I, as a Browns fan, haven't had a quarterback to love since...Kosar?)

I love Ben Roethlisberger and Peyton Manning as current quarterbacks, but I certainly appreciate (and highly agree with) your love for Bernie.  I loved him so much, with his curly dark hair.  I'm not a fan of Favre's...he gets way too much lovin, and it's like he feeds on it by every year threatening to retire just to see how much everyone loves him and wants him to stay.

As a Packer fan I feel the need to respond here.  Yes, the media worship of Favre can be a bit much.  But, Favre in no way feeds off of it.  He rarely even speaks to the media.  He just does his job.  Yes, at the end of the year he takes time to decide if he will be coming back, but I have read many posts here on this site about parents having a hard time deciding to go back to work or to stay at home with their children.  You don't have to be a Packe fan to just appreciate and respect the man's talent and true love for the game.

He does love the game, I agree.  And he's very talented.  I just don't like that each year we have to hear all about "Is he retiring, is he staying?"  If he's considering it, then he should consider it privately each year and only make the announcement if and when he decides to retire.

Favre has the talent and love for the game, there's no doubt about that. I think it's the media frenzy that drives me crazy!

One of my friends pointed out that for as long as she can remember, Favre's been the QB here - and how will things go on now?
