Cabbage the size of my head!!

We have the nicest neighbors. They have an awesome garden, and are always sharing fresh, tasty treats. The latest gift? A butternut squash and a giant cabbage. Actually, this one's about twice as big as my head. (I'm pretty sure that if it fell off the Empire State building, it would crush everyone walking below.) I made cabbage and noodles for dinner tonight, and I used maybe 1/4 of the cabbage. Plus, we now have leftover cabbage and noodles - guess I know what I'll be taking to work tomorrow for lunch! I need some serious suggestions for what to do with this giant vegetable (aside from making coleslaw for the entire state of Wisconsin). Andy doesn't like coleslaw, and neither of us are crazy about sauerkraut. So tell me: what would you do with an overabundance of raw cabbage?

I'm so glad tomorrow is Friday. I'm ready for the work week to be over. Saturday, we're going apple picking. Last year we picked about 60 pounds, and I turned most of it into fresh applesauce. Because we went through that in no time at all, I'm hoping to pick twice as many apples. And of course, I'm going to make apple crisp with some of the apples. My problem with apple crisp is that once I make it, I eat it for every meal until it's gone. Apple crisp for breakfast? Sure! It has apples and a oatmeal topping - it's practically a health food! Lunch? Well, you can always have a little dessert at lunch. Dinner? Well, what better way to wrap up the day than with apple crisp? Yumm... I need to work on my self-control, or I am going to end up looking like a marshmallow.

re: Cabbage the size of my head!!

Okay, being proud of my "heritage" I just have to comment lol. I was born and raised in Europe's cabbage capital - Dithmarschen. We celebrate this with an annual cabbage festival http://www.kohltage-dithmarschen.de/  (you can switch the article to english)

If you dare to try the most traditional dish, cabbage roulades, I will translate a recipe for you.

PS: is apple crisp the same as apple crumble? If it is, I totally understand you - my DH and I went through a serious addiction for a week, but then got very sick of it.

re: Cabbage the size of my head!!

Thanks, I'll have to check out the article! I'm not sure if a crisp and a crumble are the same thing - my crisp is apples with a flour/oatmeal/brown sugar/cinnamon/butter mixture on them, baked until tender and slightly brown.. yum! What's the crumble?

re: Cabbage the size of my head!!

It's the same, I guess "crumble" is just the british term. I love that stuff!
