Can I wallpaper without it sticking out like a sore thumb?
Given Campbell, Custom Design Nestpert:
I get this question a lot and, believe it or not there are a few ways to keep it from looking out of place. First and foremost, is to stay in the same range as the existing colors in the room, even if it is the accessories (rugs, vases, etc). This way you can use any pattern and it will give the impression that it was all done together. Since you already love those colors, it makes choosing a color so much easier.
The other thing to do is work with a wallpaper company that provides custom design and color matching services. They are usually willing to modify the colors of a pattern to match your décor, you can simply provide a color sample. There is always a charge for custom work but what you get in return is the perfect match and design which is worth more in the end.
You can also have the designer create a pattern that integrates to your existing design scheme. A two tone color scheme (dark blue on light blue paper for example) is a beautiful option as well as going with an off-white paper. This has a more subtle effect than using a white paper which can sometimes look very stark.
If your walls are white, think about doing a white gloss on white matte finish paper. This is one of the most elegant design options because it is the most subtle. You can use a really bold pattern that would normally overwhelm the room but because the light just reflects the gloss at angles it can be a nice surprise and very low-key. It is something really unexpected and has a clean, open, and airy look.
