What are the kitchen essentials?

Q: What are the must-have, desert-island tools I should have in my kitchen?

A: There are days when I look at all of the doo-dads and gizmos in my kitchen collecting dust, and I think about all the dough I could have saved knowing which gadgets are really essential and useful, and which simply take up the precious little counter space I have. I had-had-had to have the pretty yellow Kitchenaid stand mixer, and as much as I love cooking, I think I’ve only used it about 12 times in the six years I’ve owned it. I have nine colanders and sieves in different sizes stacked on my kitchen rack, but I only use one. I have three counter-top canisters filled with about 40 different tools—wooden, plastic and metal spoons, spatulas, skimmers, flippers, whisks, pasta forks, tongs and more—but the only tools I use religiously are a whisk, a spatula and an instant-read thermometer. Don’t even get me started on the pasta machine that’s been used once in the last 11 years.

Chances are, you registered for and received a ton of shiny, cool kitchen stuff for the wedding, too. But if you had to do it all over again, would you re-think that bread machine and register for an extra, extra set of 400 thread-count sheets, or a few backup sets of wine glasses, instead?

If you’re a new Nestie or a pending Knottie, maybe there’s still time to save you. Maybe you still have the gift receipts for the 20-quart stand mixer, or you haven’t registered for one yet. Because, seriously, take a look at any of the 300+ recipes in The Nest's recipe finder, and I promise you won’t need a hand-held soup puree-er or a stainless steel ravioli press.

Here’s my list of must-haves to set up your newlywed kitchen. Wait until your 1st anniversary to buy anything else. By that time, you’ll know what’s essential, and what’s just wedding gift euphoria.

Kitchen Essentials

  • 8-inch chef’s knife
  • Paring knife
  • 3 flexible plastic cutting boards in different colors
  • Instant-read thermometer
  • Dry measuring cups
  • 2-cup glass measuring cup (for liquids)
  • Medium and large stainless steel mixing bowl
  • Small, medium, large sauce pans
  • Medium non-stick skillet
  • Large heavy-duty skillet
  • Medium colander
  • Veggie peeler
  • Can opener
  • Metal tongs
  • Microplane or box grater
  • Silicone rubber spatula
  • Whisk
  • Thick oven mitts
  • Lots of dish towels
  • Water kettle

Am I missing anything? Let me know what your must-haves are.

re: What are the kitchen essentials?

I'd add cake pans,  a muffin pan, and a 9 x 13 pan for lasagna or a chicken.

Don't forget the 8X8 baking dish, soup ladle, measuring spoons... oh my!  In my eyes, a lot of things were left off the list, but it depends on how much time you spend in the kitchen, what, and how much you cook!

my pie dish!

re: What are the kitchen essentials?

I haven' t checked this Q&A feedback for a while...sorry!

Yeah, my generic list is missing some of the baking items, so thanks for adding them! I do think a baking/casserole dish and measuring spoons are essential-essential. But, really, the list I posted is more "beginner"--not necessarily for the hardcore cooks here, who will have that stand mixer, the bread machine, the pasta roller, etc.

Keep adding your ideas! The list gets better as it grows. But we're talking ESSENTIALS, and while you're at it, why it's so critical. MaggieEMcCoy--why the pie dish? What's your specialty?

re: What are the kitchen essentials?

cookie sheets- even if you don't bake, most people will throw some nestle circles on a tray.  I just got some after 1.5 years of marriage, but severely missed having them and got upset over my easily burned edges and gooey middles that pans caused

I would also add the meatloaf pan.  I never thought I'd need it but I love it!

re: What are the kitchen essentials?

if you are a baker you MUST have a silpat (a flexible silicone baking sheet liner) and silicone baking cups. Easy clean up, even cooking, and you'll never have to worry about running out of cupcake baking cups (because these are reusable) or nonstick cooking spray (no need for it with these).

re: What are the kitchen essentials?

A 12" cast-iron skillet is my go-to item -- I use it 3+ times per week for stovetop-to-oven dishes, and anything from tomato sauce to cornbread to fish.

My indoor Calphalon grill pan does wonders!   Who said you can't have BBQ Chicken or Beef Kabobs all year round? :)

I agree a spoon rest is really handy we keep one by the stove.

I also keep scissors in the kitchen, opening frozen veggies and milk all sorts of uses.

A med-large cast iron pot - I use my martha stewart one ALL the time to make soups!

re: What are the kitchen essentials?

I can't live wihtout my "chef's pan". I use it every meal--its got sides tall enough for soups or sauces, but still short enough for frying. The shape is easier than a regular frying pan if you are doing like silver-dollar pancakes.

re: What are the kitchen essentials?

I have a set of 3 rectangular pyrex containers with navy blue lids. They are my most used for baking and cooking. Love them cause I can use it for baking and storing it in there safe and clean with the lid. And my wooden spatula.

I use my Kitchenaid at least 3 times a week, but I'm a big baker(I make my own bread) We also have a great Cuisinart griller that grills meat/veggies and makes paninis

I would also add my food chopper!  I love it and use it all the time.  (even thought it may not be an "essential"....it ranks pretty high!

I love my crockpot and have used my mini food processor more than I thought I would!

re: What are the kitchen essentials?

toaster/toaster oven combo. It is one unit on my counter an I use it all the time. It's so much easier to do toast for breakfast in an actual toaster than doing it in the oven! The toaster oven is great to re-heat little things or to do garlic bread or hot appetizers in. I didn't have a toaster oven until I got married, and I love it!

Individual cup coffee maker. Love this b/c my hubby and I can make just one cup at a time directly into travel mugs. --I would get a different model than we did, but it's still pretty awesome. We use this nearly every day and our regular coffeepot from our single days only when we have guests over.

Things not necessary:

Bullet Blender-I honestly didn't register for it, but receved one any way! It's so ridiclous. We've only used it for smoothies.

re: What are the kitchen essentials?

Definitely a crockpot! It's good for beginners and experts alike, and you can just throw all of your ingredients in, set the temp and come home to a hot dinner after a long day at work. I think God invented it.

I could not LIVE without my Cuisinart Griddler!  Works as an open face grill, panini press, and basically anything else you could need!

re: What are the kitchen essentials?

I agree with multiple cutting boards being an essential.  I also love my wooden spoons.  Maybe it's the Italian in me!  Have fun cooking, that's all that matters!

re: What are the kitchen essentials?

I love my kitchenaid mixer even though I only use it about once a month on average, it's a huge help with whipped cream or anything else that requires a lot of mixing. Also, my cuisinart food processor and bread maker... I make bread, biscuits, danish and you can use it for jams which I am planning for next year if my garden does well, and the processor is awesome because I can be pretty clumsy and it keeps me from possibly cutting my fingers.
