My thoughts on bug bites

Posted Tuesday, June 19, 2007 11:28 AM

I hate bug bites.  I think they are the worst thing about the summer.  I'll take the sweating, the air conditioning going out, the sunburns, anything, but I can't take bug bites.  Unfortunately, bugs love me.  They LOVE me.  If I'm outside, no one else around me will be bit because they will flock to me.  People love hanging out with me outside for this reason.  They are safe.  So two days ago, I woke up with, count them, 11 bug bites.  Yikes.  Of course I was freaked out that bugs were nibbling on me as I slept, so I immediately stripped my bed and washed everything.  I haven't yet taken the duvet cover out of the dryer, so we've been sleeping with just a sheet, and Chris hates sheets.  He has woken up the past two mornings very unhappy, but it's not like he's incapable of getting the cover out of the dryer either.  It's just that neither of us wants to stuff our comforter back into the cover and button up the bottom.  It's really annoying.

So I scratch and scratch.  People tell me not to because it makes them worse, but I'm okay with that.  I'm an immediate gratification kind of person.  I can't wait for nature to take its course and for these bug bites to slowly fade away.  I'd rather demolish them early with my fingernails until they become scabs...and aren't itching me anymore.  So now I'm all scabby and my husband thinks I'm gross.  But I feel SO MUCH BETTER.

re: My thoughts on bug bites

That's too funny! I'm the exact same way and I completly feel your pain girl!! I actually was even worse when I was a little kid... i would get so many bug bites that I would swell up so bad that i couldn't walk b/c of the number of bites on my foot or leg.  My parents took me to the doc and they gave me a tiny little green pill that changes the scent that your body naturally produces. I had to take it 2 times a day... but it really worked. The doctor said that everyone has a scent that they produce.... there is nothign that you can do about it, except with the pill that changes how it smells to certain insects (its not even s/thing that other people can smell). I know it sounds odd but it worked.

Now... the issue is not nearly as bad! When I know I"m going to be outside  for an extended period of time I always make sure to use scent free products. Think about it... shampoo, conditioners, shower gels/scrubs/soaps, lotions, body splashes.... and many types of makeups all come with a different scent. On any given day you prob have atleast 5 (this is a understatement) different scents that you've put on just doing your daily routine. (I"M GUILITY AS WELL!) But during the summer I really try to be careful about the products I use! AND I always carry around bug spray with me! That crap stincts but it surely beats the heck out of being bitten and having bumps all over you.

I heard that changing your scent does work... (I hadn't heard of those green pills though) but I had a friend who used to have that problem... and she started taking garlic pills... the bugs just fled from her... it was cool... I personally haven't tried it... but i don't go outside much to make it worth it...

I'm with you.  I hate, Hate, HATE bug bites.  We're having a gnat problem currently... they're smaller than the screens on our windows, and our window fans are actually sucking them in!  (about 50% end up dead on the floor next to the fan, which is how I know it's happening.)  I just scratch.

re: My thoughts on bug bites

Bugs love me too, especially in really tropical places (eg Fiji).  But last time we went to Fiji, it was for our wedding, and there was no way I was having visible bites on me for the photos.  So I stopped using heavily scented moisturisers at night (the Body Shop fruit body butters were the WORST) and covered myself with repellant and it was totally fine.  I also took a B vitamin (can't remember which one), as I had read that it stops making you so 'attractive', but a travel doctor I went to recently said that's a completely unproven theory, so don't waste your money on that.

Anyway, hey, at least it's summer!
