Direct from the mouth of a child

I worked a soccer photo shoot recently - you know, the cute little kids in soccer uniforms and miniature cleats posing with a ball and then with their team.  Well, this little girl, maybe about five or six years old, came up to me and said hi.

"Hello," I said.

"What's your name?"

"René."

"Do you go to school here?" she asked.  We were photographing at a junior high school, so I kind of laughed at her question.

"No. I'm done with school.  Even college."

"Oh," she said. "Then you must have kids now."

Ouch.

re: Direct from the mouth of a child

Don't feel bad. A few years ago, my nephew said the same thing. He was six at the time and he asked how old I was, so I told him.  Then he asked where my kids were and I told him I didn't have any. He said "Not even one?" Not even one. He looked very perplexed and said "But who am I going to play with when I come over?"  I thought it was kind of cute, but it is interesting to see how early we all get drilled into our heads that at a certain age you are supposed to have kids.
