Boston, it is

Posted Monday, April 14, 2008 1:42 PM

Whoops, I mentioned the baby's name in my last blog before realizing I never even told you guys what it is going to be.  So our baby's name will be Boston Liam.  Boston is my maiden name and something we both feel is a fun, suitable name for a first born son.  I was very attached to my last name (I even changed my middle name from Michelle to Boston after we got married and I changed my last name) and always wanted to incorporate it into my child's name.  Liam is Irish and my husband is Irish, and we needed something short and simple to break up our poor boy's unique first name and very long English/British-sounding last name.

Lots of people have said they love it, but of course we also get a lot of this: "Hmm, Boston.  So what will you call him?"  And we answer, "Um, Boston."  I guess people just can't handle the concept of no nickname.  They're like, "You can't shorten that.  What, will you call him Boss?"  No, we'll call him Boston.  Why is that so complicated?  My name is René and I was just always called René.  I don't see why people think every name needs to be shortened or "cutified" by giving nicknames.  I'm sure kids in school will come up with something for him, but for us, calling him Boston is not going to exhaust us each day.

It also doesn't bother me when people flat out tell me they don't like it.  So share your thoughts on the name.  Any teasings you can see in his future?  The worst I can imagine is just what I got when I was a kid: "Are you from Boston?" and "Are you a Boston Red Socks fan?"

re: Boston, it is

You already know I love it!  I am not a fan for shortening names, and the names we have chosen are really not nick-nameable.  That's just fine by us!

I don't think I'll be able to handle people telling me they don't like our names, so we might keep them secret.  Or maybe I'll just keep them secret from the people I actually KNOW know.  ^.~  I know my mother will probably hate our boy's name, so yeah.

re: Boston, it is

Okay, so I love the name Boston, it is pretty cool.  However, I really think calling him Boss would be awesome. But I'm a fan of The Boss, so I'm musically partial to the name.

I got a lot of heat for my favorite boys name, I love the name Gerard.  You shoud hear my mother make fun of it.  It is awful.  She told me that if we name him that (if we even have a boy one day)  she will call him Buddy.  And she will tell every one of her friends to call him buddy as well.  So Matt and I decided that we can't name him Gerard, but it makes me sad.

Very cool.  You don't want your kid to have the same name as 5 other little guys at school.  It is a strong, masculine sounding name, and it means a lot to you.  Don't worry about a nickname.  What's the point of formally naming your child, if you know you are going to call them something else anyways.  My name is Carly, and growing up everyone would ask what it was short for.  It works both ways.  Ignore all nay sayers!

re: Boston, it is

I like it.  It is unique and meaningful to you (but not unique in that weird sketch way where you wonder "what were those parents thinking?").

re: Boston, it is

Very cool name!  Its such a nice deviation from the popular names there are now (like Aiden, Brayden, Kaden...anything that rhymes with those...), and I have always loved the city of Boston :) Great idea!

re: Boston, it is

I really love the name....unique, but not as unique as some of the other names out there. I also have always loved the name Liam. The only thing I don't like is I am a huge NY Yankees fan so it does remind me of the Red Sox....haha. His classmates will find  way to shorten it though. My name is Erin and some people call me "air" for short...I never even thought you could shorten Erin, but people found a way.

re: Boston, it is

I love the name, more importantly love where it came from... you need to name your baby whatever you want, it is after all YOUR baby!

I however, LOVE a nickname! probably because my name shana (pronounced Shay-Na) is so hard for people... hence all my friends call me Shay (Lynn is my middle name) -- but because of the misprounounciations - shannon, shauna, i even got janet once! i like easier common names... my DH's name is robert, his family calls him bobby, friends call him rob and co-workers robert... but he wants his eventual kid named after him if its a boy so i've already decided to call the kid RJ - robert jr... then again, i'm hoping for a girl, so guess we'll see!

re: Boston, it is

I love the name Boston! Be happy your maiden name is a name that can work for a first name as well, My friend used her maiden name for her son as well but her maiden name was Car - in my opinion doesn't work so good.

re: Boston, it is

1.  I love it

2.  I love it even more because I'm from Boston and it rocks

3.  I had a friend named Rene who was named Rene to avoid nicknames (her parents hated them) and all of her friends called her nene.  :  )  Don't be surprised if people call him Boss.

4.  I actually thing Boss is cute too.

re: Boston, it is

I really like it. And, when we've been picking out names I don't go by a cute nickname either. Even if they're long names. I've just never been a nick-name kind of gal.

re: Boston, it is

I like it! Actually, one of the "rules" for our baby names is that it doesn't have an easy nickname. I hate when people name their kid a long name just to give them a nickname... our other rule is that it must be somewhat short. Liam is one of my top first name picks for a boy :)

re: Boston, it is

I totally agree with the whole nickname thing. I absolutely HATE it when people automatically shorten someone's name when they're introduced. My mom's name is Judith and sometimes people will call her Judy, but she promptly corrects them.

My daughter's name is Lilienne, after my grandma. She was always called by her full name and I want the same for my daughter. I've had people tell me that she'll get Lily, but I'm still going to insist that she be called by her full name.

i think it"s great toincorporate a name w/family history.  i have to say, though, I wouldn't hate it if people wanted to call my kid "boss" lol

re: Boston, it is

I just wanted to say I love the fact you are using your maiden name since my husband and I intend to do the same, name our first born son Jackson Bradley, my maiden name was Jackson and his dad's name is Brad, so any I love it and hopefully we'll be pg soon and get to actually name a baby instead of theorize. :)
