Chips

On Saturday the finacé and I were driving across town when I noticed a possible chip in the windshield. It has been a harsh winter here and the streets are covered in small stones that have been flying up and hitting the windshield, so a small chip was completely possible. Slightly disheartened at the prospect of having to fix the windshield, I decided to look at something else. Whenever my eyes wander and the sun is brightly shineing, my eyes inevitably end up staring at my engagment ring.
After a few moments of admiring the sparkles, I noticed something off, I have a princess cut diamond and one side appeared shorter than the other. I looked really hard, trying to figure out why I had never noticed it before and I realized that my diamond has a chip in it!?!
After staring at it and looking at it from every angle, and having my finacé do the same, I can confirm one of the corners has chipped out. WTF? It's not noticible unless you are looking specifically for it, even then it's hard to tell if it's a chip or just a trick of the light, so it's not a huge ordeal. I have NO idea how/when it happened, although juding by the frequency of which I stare at my engagment ring, it must have happened in the day or so before I noticed it. My fiancé wasn't upset, he said that was part of normal wear and tear, but come on, my diamond chipped.
Since M bought the diamond from a co-worker and had it reset by a now out-of-business jeweler, there isn't much we can do about it. I have it insured, but I think I'll talk to our wedding ring jewelers when we pick them up (possibly this weekend!!) The diamond still seems set in place, but I worry about it either falling out or chipping further, so hopefully our new jeweler can advise me on if I should replace the diamond or just try and ignore it.
And, as though a chip in the diamond wasn't enough, it is indeed a chip in the windshield. I guess it was the weekend for chips.
