35W Bridge Collapse and God

Posted Friday, August 03, 2007 8:46 AM

It hits a little too close to home because I live only about 2 miles from that bridge!! There has been a lot of road construction in that area lately and the entrance ramps I usually use have been closed so I haven't driven that bridge much lately. But I used to drive across that bridge all the time!! Many of my friends drive across that bridge a couple times a day. One of my friends works with a guy who drove across the bridge at 6:00, minutes before it collapsed. The same friend's neighbor was on the bus that was on the bridge and when the bridge collapsed, the bus freefalled for 40-60 feet. He helped get all the kids off safely.

My brother went down to the scene and got some pretty cool pics (of a very tragic event). I emailed them to my coworkers and one girl posted them on her myspace and facebook pages (giving credit to my bro). One of her canadian friends that works at a radio station saw them and wanted to interview him because of how close he got, the pictures he took, and that he's a U of M student. So my little bro is famous in Canada!!

It's crazy how this stuff happens out of the blue. When my friend Brittany told me about the bridge collapsing, I was shocked and felt that it just couldn't be the bridge that I was so familiar with, the bridge that links my neighborhood to downtown Minneapolis, a major interstate through the Cities. "Not that one." But it was and I felt sadness and fear for all the people who were on that bridge, just driving home from work, probably anxious and frustrated in the rush hour traffic. It has reminded me that it is only by God's goodness that I get to work alive and that I get home at the end of the day alive. Life can be over in an instant, when you least expect it, when you're doing the most mundane, everyday thing. Appreciate everyday for what it is--a gift from God--but mostly, repent and turn to Christ!

If you died today, got up to the gates of heaven and God asked, "Why shoudl I let you in?", what would you say? It's bold but I will say it: Being a "good person" is not enough! We all are sinners and are only saved from hell by grace through believing in Christ Jesus and living our lives for Him.

re: 35W Bridge Collapse and God

We are all praying for your town and the families that were affected by this tragic event! Its so awesome that you would post this and share the love of God with the readers! My cousin who is 23 had a near life and death experience this past week and it reminded me of the same thing that you pointed out... we never know just when it is our time to go, and b/c of that, we need to live everday to the fullest and to be ready at all times.

I grew up in Minnesota (although not in that area) and my husband does a lot of business in Minneapolis. I also have two sisters that live in the cities. I spoke with my Mom for the first time today since it happen. Although I knew that my Mom was fine, I was a little worried about my two sisters. Like you, I feel a personal connection to the tradegy.  I am positive that I have been on that bridge several times! God's protection is amazing! Thank you for bringing God to the foreground in the situation. I am sure that there will be plenty of amazing testomonies that will come from this situation. I pray that God will heal the hearts of those affected in this tradegy.
