Always A Work In Progress

For those of you that own a home I'm sure you know what I mean. No matter how much work you do to your house, there is always something else to be done. Since moving in to our home nearly 6 years ago the Hubby and I have done plenty of updating and upgrading to the house. New paint inside & out, refinished hardwood floors, new carpet, new kitchen appliances, re-landscaped the yards front and back (several times), new furniture, created a nursery, etc.

So now we find ourselves at a bit of a crossroads... We updated our kitchen about 2 years ago with a new floor, new cabinet doors, new counter, new sink, new appliances, new pantry shelves and new lighting. BUT we didn't do it to the best of our ability. We did it well, but at the time we thought we might be selling or renting the house out and didn't want to spend a ton on a kitchen that we weren't going to enjoy, or might get thrashed by renters.  Since we are obviously staying for a while, we feel like we should really re-do the kitchen and take the opportunity to maximize what little space there is, add all new cabinets, granite counters - the whole deal.

My problem is, how do you get over the cost of the previous work since we will most likely scrap all the old material? And of course how would we pay for this wonderful dream kitchen with just my salary since the Hubby started school and wont finish for another two years.

I suppose we can skip the kitchen and install the front fence we've been wanting since having the baby, or maybe the air conditioning we've been daydreaming about, or maybe we should re-do the bathroom!

...see what I mean... It's always a work in progress.

Oh believe me I know how it is.  We're only 2 years in to our new home and haven't started any new projects yet because we can't decide where to begin or how to get the most bang out of our buck.  Like you we're not sure how long we'll be in this house and so it's hard to fork over a ton of money.

In my opinion since you've already made improvements to the kitchen, you should work on some of the other things you want.  With the baby it seems like a fence is a must - it's the baby's safety at stake and that has to take precedence over everything else.  The air conditioning is also a matter of protecting the baby so I vote for that as well.  You can always do the kitchen when hubby is out of school as a present to you both for getting through the times when money was tight.

I heard about selling cabinets on Ebay.  Perhaps you could try that or you could try selling cabinets, appliances, etc. through a local paper.  You never know...you could make a few bucks there to help you with the new costs.
