I looked, I shopped, I conquered! (Plus questions for the moms!)

Tyler and I are buying the furniture for our little one since we only want one registry and didn't see a single crib or dresser that suited our needs at BabiesRUs. So I started looking online Friday night and quickly found the crib that I want. It's a Target mini crib in white and is the perfect size for our little apartment! (Not to mention it's flippin' adorable! Smile) I also found a great mini crib mattress that will fit perfectly, is good quality, but doesn't cost a huge amount.

That's where the online shopping luck ran out, though...I was getting so frustrated that I couldn't find any bedding sets or extra sheets or ANYTHING for a mini crib! Thankfully, my oldest SIL is the diva of online shopping and after a quick call to her Saturday morning, I had six different websites emailed to me with bedding that would perfectly fit the dimensions of the crib and mattress we're getting! I found the cutest ivory and brown polka dot/line bumper and crib skirt with 2 sets each of ivory and brown jersey sheets! I'm hoping that the ivory against the white crib wont drive me crazy, but I just fell in love with the look of them! Smile

Which brings us to the question portion of today's post! Stick out tongue

What are your thoughts on crib bumpers? Necessary? Safe? The website says that it meets all regulaion standards, but it doesn't say anything about being breathable or anything like that...

And is $500 a good price for a crib, mattress, mattress pad, bumper, crib skirt, and four sheets? It seems pretty reasonable, but I've obviously never bought baby furniture before and just want to make sure that I'm not going crazy with the spending.

TIA, ladies!

re: I looked, I shopped, I conquered! (Plus questions for the moms!)

My opinion on the bumper is that it is six to one, half a dozen to the other. People say it increases the risk of SIDS, but then there are others that worry about their baby bumping their head/hurting an arm or leg through the slats in the crib or they worry about it getting drafty (we would have used bumper pads if we stayed at our old house if we had stayed there because of this reason). My opinion is that if you are worried/concerned about SIDS, don't use them. Babies can die from SIDS from a million different things. I personally don't have bumper pads, but I think it's a personal choice thing.

And on the price thing, I really can't say. lol We were given a crib from my parents and I made the bedding. We probably spent $150 on fabric, plus all the time making it. I think our mattress cost about $75 on sale?

My advice for spending when you are expecting is to shop around, you have plenty of time. :D

I used bumpers with her in the cradle, but I don't think I will when I move her to the crib.  Especially since she's thinking about rolling over soon, though I might get the mesh kind.  Her crib is a convertible one too, and the standard bumpers don't really fit it well, so that kinda clinched it for me too.  Price doesn't sound too bad, it's probably what most people end up paying I think, for the whole deal.  Sounds like it will be super cute!

Sorry I can't be of much help, since he have not purchased a crib yet.  But I'm not a big fan of bumpers, both because of the SIDS issue and because I don't really like the look of them personally (more of a clean lines person).   I can say at a month old Nathan definitely does not move around enough to make it to the sides of the crib.

We had bumpers kindly shipped to us from the US because I remember us all having bumpers so clearly (I come from a big family).  We even all *gasp* slept on our tummies.  I am NOT downplaying the risk of SIDS and think it is a personal decision for everyone, but for me, I would have felt strange not having them.  Ours are super soft and cushy, and I think our child will enjoy the feel of them once he learns how to actually use his hands because it has a cute elevated polka dot pattern on it as well.  (It's hard to explain, but it is really gorgeous.)

I think we spent $400 on everything for the crib but I'll only buy things on sale. We use the bumper both at home and at Seb's moms house (she has a crib for him).  I have seen some people use the bumper but leave it off the mattress like an inch to let air through, not sure if its safer that way or not.

We haven't even used our crib yet and I'm not sure we will but if we do I don't think we'll be using bumper pads.  Although if Seth would have slept in the cradle I think I would have gotten some breathable ones since he moves so much, I remember one time I put him in the cradle to go to the washroom and when I got back he had his arms and legs sticking of of the rails, he rolls and moves alot if he's not beside me. GL!

Christopher sleeps in his crib everynight.  I would say $500 for all of that is pretty reasonable.  We have the breathable bumper on and since he has started to become very active in his sleep now, I am very comfortable with the breathable bumper.  Sometimes I find him pushed up against the bumper in the mornings because of his movement during the night.  It just makes me feel better.  GL with your decision.

re: I looked, I shopped, I conquered! (Plus questions for the moms!)

I'm coming in late so you might not notice my post.

$500 is good.  You're getting a lot for that.  We bought our nursery furniture too.  We didn't want to register for something we felt was our financial responsibility, and I also didn't want to wonder if I'd get it in time as a gift.  Those sometimes take awhile to get it.

We have the Breathable Bumper from Babies R Us.  It's flat and has breathing holes, it's great.  I wouldn't recommend a regular fluffy bumper because I've seen Boston nestle his head in the corner of the crib before and it would make me so nervous if there was some pillow type thing in the way of his breathing.
