Are we the only people excited for the Olympics?

Posted Friday, July 04, 2008 8:54 PM

Andrew and I are all caught up in the Olympic Trials going on these past couple of weeks.  We had the track trials written on our calender!  And every night is swimming trials in our house.  It's amazing, world records are being broken night after night....and no one at work knows what the heck I'm talking about....awkward!  Yet I sat there one day while three people talked about their earliest Steelers memories and how many games they've been to.

I am not a huge fan of football and baseball, which is obviously pretty big around here (one nurse painted her Mustang gold and black for the Steelers...it's that crazy).  But no one has been watching any of the trials and I get the "wow, looser" eye when I start talking about it ;)

I don't know, I think these athletes are amazing.  The age ranges are rediculous, teenagers through forty year olds!  It's not like these guys who graduate college and make millions going pro and then get injured and never do anything again.  These people at the trials are just getting good as these other pro athletes are retiring.

I dunno, I think a lot of people don't give a care about the Olympics, but I think these people are more awe inspiring than any football player could ever be, and I am way more excited for the Olympics than for the Superbowl any day....woops! that'll probably get me kicked out of America!

re: Are we the only people excited for the Olympics?

I think it's easier for people to get into football and baseball because the team is around all the time, and there's almost always something to read/watch about your favorite NFL or MLB team, even in the off season. Whereas, with the Olympics, they pop up every few years, and I think that makes it harder to get interested/connected with the Olympics. I'm generally not a huge fan of the Olympics, but my husband is. This year though, I really think we'll boycott watching them - I don't believe that China should be given the privilege of hosting the games. What's your opinion on China hosting?

Not a huge fan of the Chinese thing either.  I love the Olympics, but might have been ok with a boycott.  The fact that our president is going to the opening ceremony is super outrageous.  I can't believe that he would attend that and make it look like it's a political approval of what they do to their people.  However, I will be cheering our athletes on in hopes that they blow all of the Chinese athletes chances of medaling...that would be the ultimate comeuppance :)
