I was thinking about this again this weekend when some woman asked my friend how far along she was. Yes, she's due in August, so she's obviously pregnant physically, but what made this woman feel like she had a right to ask her? K's husband said quietly "we have friends we never knew we had ever since she started showing", and they both were looking very uncomfortable talking to this lady.

I know some people are very open about their lives, and that's fine if you want to share details, but I felt so weird standing there while this complete stranger started asking unsolicited, intimate questions.

Then at work the other day, someone brought me an "extra" copy they had of What to Expect, because we are the only ones without kids. I felt so awkward, because then everyone asked me if I was pregnant, and why would she bring me the book if i wasn't. Geeze, I didn't ask for the freaking book...it looks like an old library book. So I had to laugh and say, no we aren't. Then they asked me when I was planning on trying! Geeze?? They are nice and well meaning people, but I don't go around asking them about how menopause is coming along! Hey, how's that dried up uterus of yours?? Fall out yet??

Am I overreacting? I never thought I was sensitive about the subject until we started talking about baby. I just want to let it happen when it happens and tell people when I want to tell people. Ok, whiny blog...Maybe the heat and humidity are effecting my brain....

I guess it's kinda funny...

Funny "hehe", not funny "haha". Tomorrow we are driving 6 hours to Buffalo, for a baby shower on Saturday...for the couple we know who lives one hour from us. That's funny right?...in the totally ironic, "that's a teensy bit out of our way", sort of way. I guess it means we really like these guys, and yes, I totally wish them and the new little one well. However....might have been better economically speaking if I had driven an hour down the road to deliver my present...instead of six.

So anywhoo...I thought that was funny and thought I would share. Any thoughts? Anyone else feel the freaky sort of obligation that would take them five hours off course and $150+ in the hole for gas for something like this? I don't mean to sound nasty, but it'll be a little shower in a church back room. And I need the $ for our kitchen. OK, I'll stop. I'm a horrible person. I love pregnant women and all sort of baby related items. Just not the 6 hour drive...yeah, I'm sure I'm going to hell for this one...

First 10K

Today I broke the 6 mile mark on a run. I haven't done that since high school/college, so I am calling it my first 10K as a renewed runner :) Andrew and I got up early and were on the road before 7am since today is supposed to be another hot and humid day.

I have done 5mi. easily plenty of times before, but I have put up mental roadblocks that kept me from going to 6 and beyond, but it really wasn't that big of a deal. It helped that we picked mostly flats and downhills, so we could keep up the pace. It's good for stroking the ego to pick runs like that when you start out at a distance I think, because it will up the motivation and the "that wasn't so bad" feeling afterwards. And we only took one walking break at 4.5 mi. So, overall, not too bad.

Ms. Nancy&Mark had asked about tips for beginners. I am full of them!! Some of the best running plans push the walk/run training, where you take walking breaks when you feel fatigued. That way, you are more likely to finish your workout, and less likely to injure yourself, and most importantly, more likely to go out again! Some runners are purists and say that isn't running, but you have to start somewhere right? And everyone is different, so it may or may not work out for you, but it helped me get back in shape.

I also think having a reasonable goal in mind is a huge motivator. Andrew and I picked out races for once a month so that we would not slow our training and we would have time to recover if we had injured ourselves. That and registering and paying ahead of time keeps you motivated to run because now there's $ invested!! :) Hope that helped ladies!

Keeping myself accountable

I wasn't going to blog about this, but I figure it might help to keep me accountable and on top of things. Andrew and I (well, mainly me and he's going along with it) decided to run our first half marathon in Rochester in September, and today was my official start to hardcore training. We have been doing 5Ks this summer, so we have a base built up, but we haven't really done the speedwork and tempo runs that would help us improve. So putting this out there might help to keep me going and motivated.

It was super hot and humid today, so didnt get in my full workout, but what I did was quality enough. maybe we should have picked a later half so then we wouldn't have to do the training in the middle of the summer, but I'm not that great at planning ahead like that :)

September back home will be really nice, it'll be around our 2 year anniversary, and it'll be nice to hopefully have a cooler race day. That and the Rochester half gives out medals to finishers and I don't think the Harrisburg one does...if I'm grinding out 13.1 miles, I want a nice heavy piece of hardware to put around my neck ;)

RTOTD

So here is my random thought of the day...There are just certain songs that now I can only associate with movies I've heard them in. Like now, it's the Wedding Singer, and it's that Spin me Round song in the beginning. Every time I hear it now, all I can think of is Wedding Singer! That movie is full of them. And one day at work, my manager was talking about that song Dreamweaver, and I was like, "oh yeah, that was in Wayne's World!" Yeah, I am a complete loser, and I have seen a lot of movies, so this is constantly happening.

I hope I am not the only one with this mental problem! I'm sure it's some association disorder, or something some psych majors can put their fingers on. So I thought this would be a nice diversion from baby and house talk in the blogs...after this past month, I am so off the baby clock and I'm sick of the damn house projects, so lets talk about something else for a change....

Are we the only people excited for the Olympics?

Andrew and I are all caught up in the Olympic Trials going on these past couple of weeks. We had the track trials written on our calender! And every night is swimming trials in our house. It's amazing, world records are being broken night after night....and no one at work knows what the heck I'm talking about....awkward! Yet I sat there one day while three people talked about their earliest Steelers memories and how many games they've been to.

I am not a huge fan of football and baseball, which is obviously pretty big around here (one nurse painted her Mustang gold and black for the Steelers...it's that crazy). But no one has been watching any of the trials and I get the "wow, looser" eye when I start talking about it ;)

I don't know, I think these athletes are amazing. The age ranges are rediculous, teenagers through forty year olds! It's not like these guys who graduate college and make millions going pro and then get injured and never do anything again. These people at the trials are just getting good as these other pro athletes are retiring.

I dunno, I think a lot of people don't give a care about the Olympics, but I think these people are more awe inspiring than any football player could ever be, and I am way more excited for the Olympics than for the Superbowl any day....woops! that'll probably get me kicked out of America!

How is it almost July??

Where the hell did June go?? Did I miss something? Wasn't it April just a couple days ago? Our weekends have been so crammed with projects and little trips that we are going to miss the whole summer. I haven't gone swimming in two summers! Yeah, not like back in school where we are totally free all day for three months, but it's still time to let loose a little bit.

But oh yeah, we bought a house...that's where my summer is going! Can't get away or go anywhere because we need the $ to work on the house, and we need the weekends to do those projects. Dang, if I knew being an adult was going to be this dull I might have held off on the house thing Hahaha, j/k....i guess.
