Bridesmaid Dresses

A friend of mine graciously requested that I be in her wedding party, which will take place in February.  Her search for bridesmaid dresses was a bit problematic.  She was looking at the Watters WTOO collection, which is great:  the collection has cocktail, tea length, floor length and different levels of formality.  One of the confusing things about their website is that it seems that each dress is of a different fabric, and each fabric has its own set of colors.  My friend had issues because she assumed that all of the dresses were available in her color, Desert Rose.

One of the nice things about her wedding was that she was open to letting her bridesmaids choose the style, as long as all of the dresses were cocktail length and the same color.  She originally sent out a list of dresses, but then we figured out that the color she had given us wasn’t available in the styles choices she had given us.  After a long afternoon of back-and-forth emails, she decided on a slightly different color, the Desert Rose.

One thing that was slightly annoying was that she had picked out styles for a couple of her bridesmaids, so after we had scoped out the styles, she emailed and said that the maid of honor should wear style X, and that another of the bridesmaids “had the body to pull off style Y.”  I understand what she meant, but in an email it sounds a little harsh (especially when you’re worrying about how you’re going to look in your own wedding dress).

Now, I’m not a “pink person,” but I am aware of the fact that to be a good bridesmaid, you suck it up and wear what the bride asks you to wear.  I will wear pink with a smile on my face.  I went to The Bridesmaid’s Store (in Austin) to pick up my dress and it went very smoothly.  I told the lady behind the counter my name and she pulled out my order slip, charged me my balance, and brought me the dress.  The whole “process” only took about 5 minutes.  I went home and immediately tried it on and, of course, it was a little big on top (the “dress” is technically a top and a skirt).  I also think it makes me look wider than I actually am, which I believe is a requirement the designers set for themselves when they start these dresses.  Which is fine, again I understand, and I will wear my pink dress with a smile, but probably never again.
