Welcome to my blog! Mike and I were married on July 22, 2006 in Erie, PA. Although we're not technically considered newlyweds anymore, we still feel like we are! We live in a house we rent from my MIL with our dog, a pap-a-poo mix, Louis (pronounced "Louie") who is our pride and joy. I'm finishing up school full time to get my BA in finance while working full-time in a financial aid office and Mike is currently a technician for a national aerospace corporation. While we lead fairly boring lives, I'll try to spice things up from time to time to make the blog more exciting to read :)

Grad School? Me?

Posted Wednesday, January 30, 2008 9:40 AM

I've really been starting to think alot about getting my MBA lately. I'm still working towards my undergrad degree in Finance right now but if all goes as planned, I should be done by next Spring (May 2009). If that's the case, it will have taken me approximately 8 years to graduate with my BA degree and I would be adding on about another 2 years or so before I'd complete the MBA program. That's alot of school for someone who isn't a doctor or a lawyer!

I had never really thought about grad school before. I take that back; I had thought about it but never actually considered pursuing it. I always thought I'd be perfectly happy with my BA degree. I guess I was wrong. As I near the end of my undergrad years, am I turning into a perpetual student? I absolutely love my major and can't wait to actually get out into the "real" world and start using my soon-to-be degree. I currently work as a Financial Aid Administrator so, although I work with numbers and money on a daily basis, it isn't exactly the sector of the financial industry I'd like to work in for the rest of my life. Also, the school I've been looking into attending offers MBA degrees with concentrations in both Investments and in Finance in general. While I love all of the investments courses that I've taken in the past, I'm not so sure that I'd want to pigeonhole myself with a concentration strictly in Investments. I think I'm leaning towards the Finance concentration since I'm still trying to determine what sector of the industry I'd most like to work in. I hate to admit it, but I'm a little intimidated by the GMAT as well. It brings me back to the days of SAT's (*shudder*).

Obviously, I still have alot of things to consider.

Hi,

I know exactly what you're going through.  I also want to get my MBA except in International relations and public policy.  Right now I am working in a dead end job with absolutely no room for growth.  I am itching to do something really great with my life that I enjoy.  Just take it one step at a time.  Finish your undergrad then take the GMATs then worry about the rest as it comes.  You'll be able to do it!!!

re: Grad School? Me?

My cousin totally has you beat!  She's about to graduate from a 2-year community college in June...9 years after she started!!!!  No kidding.  It took her 9 years to get her associates degree.  Not sure what she was doing those 9 years, but it obviously wasn't studying because she was going full-time...not a class here, a class there.

I am sure the right decision will hit you and you'll know exactly what to do.  Will that prolong baby-making even more?  If so, that's not necessarily a bad thing.  The happier you are in life, the happier your children will be.  If staying in school and having an MBA makes you happy, it's the right decision.

I am so with you on this issue! I would say if you want to get your MBA DON'T take time off just go ahead and do it. There are some schools that are starting to take the GRE so look into that as well. Good Luck.

re: Grad School? Me?

My 2 cents would to go straight from undergrad to graduate school.  You are already in the routine of going to school / studying / etc, so there wouldn't be any change.  If this is something you really want, GO FOR IT!  Don't let anyone / anything stand in your way.  Even if you don't use the degree (ie, SAHM) you have the self satisfaction that you went to graduate school, and something your children will be very impressed with.

I did get my MBA, and I can say the GMAT was a b*tch, but like everything else in life, I overcame it.  And you will too.  Also, again, just my 2 cents, if you already have a BA in Finance, I'd get my MBA speciliazation in another area to broaden your specilzations (if that makes any sense).
