Welcome to my blog! Mike and I were married on July 22, 2006 in Erie, PA. Although we're not technically considered newlyweds anymore, we still feel like we are! We live in a house we rent from my MIL with our dog, a pap-a-poo mix, Louis (pronounced "Louie") who is our pride and joy. I'm finishing up school full time to get my BA in finance while working full-time in a financial aid office and Mike is currently a technician for a national aerospace corporation. While we lead fairly boring lives, I'll try to spice things up from time to time to make the blog more exciting to read :)

Buying Organic?

Posted Friday, March 07, 2008 9:05 AM

Along with my resolve to eat healthier, I've also decided to try and purchase organic when I can and to switch my household cleaners to more environmentally friendly products. After going grocery shopping last night, I realized I spent about $60 more than normal. Holy moly, batman! Granted, we were almost out of everything so I also stocked up on meat to put in the freezer, but the price still blew me away! I'm going to try and see if we can stretch the food we have from our typical 2 weeks to 3 weeks, with only stopping to purchase fresh produce and milk as needed. I took a good long look around our kitchen last night and I think this will be possible, but we'll see.

I must insert a rave for Method cleaning products. I know most money/environmentally savy gals on the boards recommed a homemade concoction to help save on costs in this area, but the smell of vinegar makes me sick to my stomach so I can't fathom the thought of including it in my cleaning routine. Instead, I've started using Method for all of my cleaning needs and have been extremely happy with the results. They are awesome cleaning products and work much better than the name brand products containing amonia and bleach.

Time to return to eating my breakfast of a healthy (and apparantly expensive) organic grapefruit Hmm

That's great!! We buy a lot of organic things and I love it.  I feel like its better for our household and the environment!  It can get very expensive though but I find that Wegemans has the best and most affordable selection

That's the reason I don't buy organic - I can't afford it! Glad to hear it's working for you though; I'll have to look for those cleaners next time I'm out.

re: Buying Organic?

I buy organic meats, fruits, and vegetables.  It is expensive.  Grocery shopping is not cheap when you buy things that are healthy.  Why do you think some of the poorest people in this country are able to still remain overweight?  The cheapest foods tend to be the worst for you.  I suck it up.  The grocery bill each week sucks, but I would rather spend my money on healthier things going into my body than on pills and supplements later when I'm not so healthy.  Just the way I look at it.
