Welcome to my blog! Mike and I were married on July 22, 2006 in Erie, PA. Although we're not technically considered newlyweds anymore, we still feel like we are! We live in a house we rent from my MIL with our dog, a pap-a-poo mix, Louis (pronounced "Louie") who is our pride and joy. I'm finishing up school full time to get my BA in finance while working full-time in a financial aid office and Mike is currently a technician for a national aerospace corporation. While we lead fairly boring lives, I'll try to spice things up from time to time to make the blog more exciting to read :)

Really rough night

Posted Tuesday, June 03, 2008 10:05 AM

Last night my BIL's dog (a yellow lab) was hit by a car and killed instantly :( It happened at my MIL/FIL's house while they were watching the dog for him. They live out in the country; the speed limit on their road is 55 but most drivers go closer to 70 since the speed limit isn't really enforced out there and it's just a long, open road. Apparantly, my FIL was walking out of the front door when the dog pushed his way past him and just took off running and wouldn't listen to FIL's commands. FIL tried to catch him but he wasn't fast enough.

Mike just happened to pull up shortly after it happened and tried to help with getting the dog loaded in his truck and taken to the emergency vet clinic before BIL could get there as he obviously didn't want him to see the dog in the condition he was in (it was very graphic). Well, BIL got there before Mike was able to get the dog into the truck and saw his poor dog and, as you can imagine, totally broke down. Mike is taking it VERY hard and so we had a very rough night last night. I think this is only maybe the third time I've ever really seen Mike cry before in the almost 7 years we've together and he wasn't just crying, he was sobbing until after midnight last night when he finally cried himself to sleep.

My heart is just absolutely breaking for everyone involved today.

re: Really rough night

How awful. It's hard to see any man cry, especially one's you are close to. My dogs are like my kids so I would be a wreck also. Especially such an awful way for the dog to die too...Did the person who hit the dog stop to help or anything?!  I feel for your family...I've heard a lot of times that getting a puppy 3 to 4 weeks after the death of a dog really helps the owner cope and brings happiness to him because he will get to watch a sweet innocent puppy grow up and do all the cute things puppies do...

re: Really rough night

How sad!! Reading it almost makes me want to cry (actually I probably would if I weren't at work). I can't imagine losing one of my dogs like that.

You'll all be in my thoughts and prayers.

re: Really rough night

Gosh, I am so sorry. Our poor puppy almost got run over when she was really little, and we live on a road like you described where people go like 70. We put in an electronic underground fence, and she sticks around now. I don't know what I would do if I had lost her. Sorry that you husband had to see that.

I am so sorry.  I think this is why I don't have pets.  I would hate to ever lose them.  I cried when my cat disappeared.

re: Really rough night

i am sooo sorry to hear this.  in march our dog Axl was at my il's house and he was hit by a car and also died instantly.  The driver left him there in the street and left without saying a word.  i can honestly say that it gets better, but still i cry almost everyday for our dog that was taken away from us so quickly......my thoughts are with you right now, truly.

re: Really rough night

That is heartbreaking!  Whenever my husband and I go out of town, we only allow pup sitters who will stay at our house because the dogs know the rules, are comfortable in their surroundings, and have an enclosed backyard.  I'm so scared of something like this happening if I let my dogs stay at someone else's house.  I'm so sorry for your husband and his brother (and your in-laws because I'm sure they are super upset too).  I couldn't even imagine.

I'm so sorry!  It is so hard to lose a pet of any kind, they somehow become your furry family members.  In time, a new pet may reduce the pain that everyone is going through.  I will be thinking of all of you!
