Welcome to my blog! Mike and I were married on July 22, 2006 in Erie, PA. Although we're not technically considered newlyweds anymore, we still feel like we are! We live in a house we rent from my MIL with our dog, a pap-a-poo mix, Louis (pronounced "Louie") who is our pride and joy. I'm finishing up school full time to get my BA in finance while working full-time in a financial aid office and Mike is currently a technician for a national aerospace corporation. While we lead fairly boring lives, I'll try to spice things up from time to time to make the blog more exciting to read :)

My dog is officially weird

Posted Wednesday, July 30, 2008 9:05 AM

Last night after spending about 5 straight hours working on my paper that's due on Friday, I decided to take Louis for a walk since he'd been stuck in the house all day. Normally, either Mike or I take him for a walk every evening but due to our schedules over the past 3 days, we simply hadn't had a chance to. Now, before you call us terrible, irresponsible pet owners, I'd like to acknowledge that we have a fenced in backyard and that he's been out there every evening playing with his frisbee (his favorite toy) so he's still gotten exercise and he's been happy. I've noticed in the past that when we miss walking him for a day or so, however, that the next time we do take him, he's a bit hard to control and he gets so excited that he doesn't listen well. So, after about 10 minutes or so of walking last night he just decided that he didn't want to walk anymore. That was it. He stopped dead in his tracks and would not budge. I realize that he's a small dog and all, but I could not get him to move in the slightest. I thought he may have originally just needed a short break to catch his breath or something, but after about 5 or 6 minutes of this, I realized I was wrong. My only option was to pick him up and carry him unless I wanted to stand there for the rest of the night. So there I am, carring my dog on his walk breaking out in a really bad sweat since it was still so humid out, wondering how in the world I'm going to make it the remaining 10 minutes home carrying this stubborn pup. Luckily, I always carry my cell phone with me when we go for walks for safety reasons. I ended up calling Mike to come and pick us up in the truck so that I wouldn't end up passing out on the sidewalk. It was the most embarrassing thing ever, even though I'll admit that it was a pretty funny sight. I kept getting passed by people riding their bikes who must have thought I was crazy. Even Mike couldn't stop laughing at us when he pulled up.

Ahhh...the things we do for our pets!

my dogs are weird too. especially one...

I bet that was a site to see! holding your dog while walking him...hmm? lol It's like those people who buy strollers for their dogs (sorry to anyone that has) unless your dog has leg problems....it like to walk! why stroller it?? (well except in this case....where your dog didn't like to walk) wonder what his issue was?

Haha this blog made me laugh only because I totally understand! My dog OWNS me! The things we do for them...I am sorry you had to be stuck in the humidity carrying your puppy. It is strange that he just stopped, usually dogs have more energy then that although I know the humidity is hard for them with all that fur. My dog always acts weird, I don't think I will ever understand her but she brings tons of entertainment :)

Oh dogs and the things they make us do.  Be happy your dogs hasn't done this before.  My one dog will request we carry him for part of a walk and I usually cave in and pick him up to give him a little rest and he isn't a tiny dog, he weighs about 18 lbs now.

re: My dog is officially weird

totally had that happen to me, except i have a german shepherd, so when he refuses to go there is no carrying him.  i usually end up getting dirty looks from people in cars and other pedestrians who must think i'm abusing him as i drag him slowly home.

re: My dog is officially weird

Yep same thing happened to us. Our Boston Terrier decided 2 1/2 miles into a walk that he was NOT walking the 2 1/2 miles back (we take him 5 miles walks at least once a week so this is nothing new to him) I had so much to do we just wanted to get home. As my husband hoisted our puppy onto his shoulder to carry him back he just sighed and said "i guess this is why people carry their dogs...i probably should stop judging them!" :) Don't worry...people just don't understand puppy stubborness

re: My dog is officially weird

We call this a "carry" at my house instead of a walk.  One time my 28 pound beagle did this - she just laid down in the middle of the road and wouldn't budge.  Normally she loves to go on walks, so I was not expecting this at all.  Anyway, I carried her most of the way home - she was heavy and it was hot outside.  Eventually she walked the last part of our trip home.

That happened to me too!  I have a Yorkie, and it was really early in the morning (I knew it was going to be hot, so I tried to go as early as possible.)  He stop dead in his tracks and wouldn't move for anything.  It was very embarrasing, but it must have been hilarious for passerbys to see.  I'm glad I am not the only one this happened to.  lol.
