Should I, shouldn't I?

I'm torn. Last week at work, we were notified of the resignation of one of the Assistant Directors of Financial Aid. Although no official job postings have been made as of yet, the word on the street is that the administration would like to hire from within our office to replace this coworker if at all possible. Initially, I really didn't think I was interested. Rather than working at our main campus, which is 10 min. away from home, this position is at our North East campus, 45 min. to an hour drive away. While the pay would be significantly more and the title would look very nice on my resume, I really enjoy the type of student we have at our main campus vs. our satellite campus. Overall, I really do like the atmosphere here moreso than at the other location.
To complicate matters further, I applied for an Assistant Director position in my office less than a year ago and although I was told that I was one of their top candidates due to my experience in the field, I was turned down because I do not yet have my BA degree. Actually, all of the candidates were turned down due to either not having enough financial aid experience or for lack of a degree and the position was ultimately eliminated. This time around, I was somewhat upset that they were asking us to apply again since those interested in the position obviously do not meet their minimum requirements in some way, shape, or form. Why would I want to waste everyone's time, including my own?
After talking it over with Mike, he's encouraged me to apply and if offered the position, I'd only have to stick it out for a year until I graduate and plan on making a complete career change. After giving this some thought this weekend, I've decided he's right. The extra money would certainly help us to dig out of debt a little sooner, the experience would be beneficial in the future, and it would only be for one year or so.
I'd really like to talk to our Director about it, but I keep chickening out. I'm not sure what I should do at this point.
