Gossip Girl

Posted Thursday, October 16, 2008 4:15 PM

Every Tuesday the Nesties on the F&B board start a thread to discuss the previous evening’s episode of Gossip Girl. More often than not, the topics are centered on fashion. In fact, an entire book could be devoted to the clothing on Gossip Girl and I’m one of the (20-almost-30-something) groupies that would buy it.

The clothes on GG are often completely over the top but fabulous nonetheless. Money is no object for these Upper East Siders, and their sense of style is apparent, even in their school uniforms. These high school students have captivated me and my coworkers to a point where we were recently gathered around the latest issue of GQ magazine professing our love for our favorite Gossip Guy (did I mention that I’m almost 30?). I never thought the day would come when I’d develop a cougar crush on a preppy bad boy who wears an ascot.

Please tell me I’m not the only one with this sad fascination of teenage drama. Maybe I’m reliving my years of 90210 (although I have no interest in watching the remake). Fashion-wise -- who’s your favorite? Frankly, I think Blair’s gone downhill as of late. I’m not loving her matronly style.

Do any of you share my guilty pleasure for Gossip Girl?

What's on your list?

Posted Thursday, September 25, 2008 11:11 PM

It seems like it was just minutes ago when I was writing a post about how hot it was in the city. Well, fall is most definitely here in New York, and my list of must-haves is a bit more daunting now that there’s a chill in the air.

I’ve managed to cross off a few of my favorite items, but the price tag on cold-weather clothing is considerably higher, so I’ll be stocking up slowly but surely (next up is this high-waisted plaid skirt from Anthropologie). Oh, and since I’m one of those people that gets a sick pleasure out of crossing things off a list (I still have an old-school planner), this is making it even more difficult to not max out my credit card. Maybe we should start an F&B Shopping Support Group?

Tell me what's on your Fall/Winter Must-Haves or Wish List.

Anything you wear that your other-half loathes?

Posted Tuesday, September 16, 2008 5:14 PM

We’ve covered what you don’t like that your significant other wears, but after a conversation with one of my girlfriends, I thought I would pose the question from his point of view when she told me that her husband couldn’t stand the look of denim skirts or a pair of jeans tucked into boots. I found this funny considering that he’s a prime candidate for a session with Carson Kressley. I was perplexed that my friend cared enough to dislike certain items of clothing, even though he could care less about what he wore himself.

Our opinioned male coworker responded with not being so fond of capris, sweater dresses and one- shoulder shirts. When I started this blog, I emailed my husband with the subject line, “Work-related question—need your opinion.” I asked him if there was anything that I wore that he detested. His answer? “Hmm, nothing comes to mind. I'll give it some more thought though.” Um, that’s okay honey. We can just leave it be.

So tell me (or rather, have your significant other tell you), is there anything you wear that he would rather you didn’t?

Stick-on eye shadow?

Posted Friday, September 12, 2008 9:40 PM

Have you heard about this? Would you buy this? Have you tried this? One of the D&R Nestie's posted this idea, and the F&B board soon discovered it. I can’t say that it sounded appealing at first, but once I clicked the link and saw that it was nothing like what I had originally imagined, I’m now intrigued. I can’t say that I’d mind an instant smoky-eye.

What are your thoughts on this stuff? I’d doubt I’ll be rocking the animal print or camo.

Q&A For You

Posted Tuesday, August 19, 2008 7:26 PM

There was a recent post about how many of the same questions were asked on the F&B board. Whether or not our members mind this, I thought I’d try and liven things up by asking a few questions that I haven’t seen (or at least seen in awhile). It's just for fun, so post your answers below in the comment section. I’ll answer too.

 1. Do you have an item that you wear every day besides your wedding or engagement ring?
 2.  What old-school product do you love?
 3.  What item of your DH/FI/SO’s would you love to throw out?
 4.  What beauty vice can’t you quit?
 5.  Were you always a fashionista?
 6.  Anything that you love to buy when you’re in a different city or country?
 7.  Do you always open your mouth when you apply mascara?

Post your fashion confessions below:

After reading a post from one of the regulars on the F&B board, who confessed to having (and wearing) an item in her closet that was over 10 years old (I can’t say that’s too much of a bad thing, KatieBride06!), I immediately began to analyze the average age of the items in my wardrobe and realized that it might be time to purge the closet.

I can say without hesitation that I do a fair amount of shopping, and updating my wardrobe is high on my narcissistic priority list; cleaning it out is not. There are a couple of items in that closet that are over a decade old, and my guilt isn't that I wear them, but that I don’t. What’s even more pathetic is my husband and I have only two closets in our tiny Manhattan apartment (not a coat closet or storage closet...two closets TOTAL). I get the big one while my husband gets the broom closet. I'm also am taking up half of the former sleeping loft with my fall/winter wardrobe. So what's special enough to continue to keep after all of these years?

I have one of those down “puffy” ski coats that I’ve owned since high school. I loathe the thing, but I feel like it might come in handy if I happen to go on a ski trip at some point (even though I’m a terrible skier and despise the cold). I also have a black wool dress that I bought my freshman year of college. It was my first expensive purchase and the dress is a true classic, but it no longer fits. I pull it out each cold season, never wear it, and put it away when the weather turns warm. Maybe my trouble with parting with the dress is that I felt in some way it helped to establish my financial independence and move into adulthood, as silly as it sounds. If it's possible to be emotionally attached to one’s clothing,  I’m guilty as charged, because alongside that puffy coat is the shirt that I wore, as ugly as it may be now, on my first day with my husband. Sap.

Oh Baby It's Warm Outside

Posted Wednesday, August 06, 2008 4:48 PM

I see fall clothes in stores everywhere I go, and it’s bittersweet. I get so excited for the new styles, but at the same time, it’s always odd to see a wool skirt paired with a sweater and tights when I’m sweating to death on my walk to the office. Therefore, I just can’t bring myself to buy cold-weather clothing just yet.

Last season I set a (very superficial, admittedly) goal to buy one or two pieces of summer clothing each paycheck when items started hitting the stores. By the time the summer actually rolled around, I had a decent wardrobe for the season. I just can’t seem to get it together for the fall…probably because I never want the summer to end. Maybe all of those fabulous boots that the F&B girls are posting will change my mind.

Thoughts? Most people seem to love either winter or summer wear. Tell me your favorite. Have you bought anything for fall yet?

Is Tight Rolling Back?

Posted Monday, August 04, 2008 10:41 PM

MrsLurkette was kind enough to dig up this gem and post it on the F&B Board: http://boards.thenest.com/boards/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=53811187&forumid=404 It appears that MrsTomCruise has gone and embraced the what was once known as the tight-roll.

I know many of you believe that if you were old enough to wear a trend the first time around, you won’t go back for seconds. I, for one, don’t believe in this theory, although I won’t wear it again if it looked bad when I was a decade younger with better legs.

I must say that Katie Holmes is the first I’ve seen to rock this trend, even on the streets of NYC, where parachute pants are in full force. I must confess that I expected this picture to be much worse when I opened the post, and I’m more annoyed at the fact that Katie can look this good in this outfit than at the outfit itself. The woman appears as if she rolled out of bed, is on her way to freshman English wearing her boyfriend’s (and not crazy husband’s) tank top, and decided that today might just be a good day to bring back tight rolled denim. Why must she always look so good, even at her worst? I’m sure Kate would look just lovely in parachute pants.

So, Nesties, what do you think? Is there any chance that you’ll be wearing this trend? Is this being seen in LA, WeezerMonkey, and Wan-na Be? Do tell!
