5 Tips for a Sassy Green Summer

Cool down dinner. Reduce energy use in the evenings by dining on no-cooking-required soups, salads and sandwiches. Such light summer fare is probably what you’re craving anyway, especially if you’re wearing your bikini (see below).  I’m going to make this delish-looking gazpacho Sunday night after picking up plump heirloom tomatoes from the farmer’s market.

Leave your hair au naturel. Rather than sweating under an energy-sucking blowdryer, let your mane air dry, which should happen quickly in the summer heat.  Try not to stress if airdrying leaves it frizzed out—throw it into a simple updo, braid it or hide it under a chic floppy hat. In July and August you get a pass from having perfectly turned-out tresses.

Green your sunscreen. Many sunscreens contain potentially toxic chemicals and nanoparticles, but you can find ones that protect you both from the rays and these nasty ingredients by checking out the EWG’s new list of the safest brands.  California Baby SPF 30 gets some of the highest marks (and isn’t just for kids).

Hippie your lipstick. Swap your department store lip color for a tiny tube of Burts Bees Lip Shimmer in Rhubarb. I am a huge fan of this universally flattering rosy shade, and the lady in my local Whole Body department tells me that they can barely keep it in stock.  It’s free of parabens and other chemicals but will still keep your kisser soft and pretty.

Lounge in your bikini. Global Warming activists advise us to set our ACs no lower than 78 degrees—if that leaves your house feeling steamy, why not strip down to your bathing suits or undies?  While lowering your eco impact, doing your round-the-house activities barely clothed can only have a positive impact on your marriage, no?

i think i would rather just walk around the house naked at a happy and comfy 72 - 78 sounds nice when bill time comes around but who wants to be funk nasty all the time :)

Yeah, 78 is very warm, especially for those of us with apartments where heat just sits around and doesn't really move.

Floor fans are a great way to stay cool, reduce energy comsumption, and reduce on your electric bill! During the summer places like Target and Walmart always have them on sale.

It's true that 78 can be hard to handle--it's not so bad here in LA because it's dry heat and there's usually a little breeze, but I remember how sticky a humid east coast day can get at those temps.  Another thing we've done is installed window unit ACs in our upstairs bedrooms, so we can just run those as needed at night rather than running the central AC (we don't have zoned heating/cooling, so when we run the central AC it cools the whole house, which is so wasteful).
