Our last cookout

Posted Tuesday, October 27, 2009 11:53 AM

Today is the last time we will light the grill this year. We only use charcoal b/c DH hates propane so it takes longer then propane. We are making poppers, chicken, and I think hambergers for tomorrow. I can't wait. It is probably the last decent day to do it since it is dry (for now) and in the mid 60s. I love food from the grill so I have been thinking about it all dayYes

Aaliyah ordered some green (non perscription) contacts and they came in yesterday. I am undesided how I feel about it. I wish she loved her brown eyes just the way they are but she thinks they are plain. I kind of understand. DH and I (both brown eyes) haven't set the best example b/c we both have used colored contacts (perscription) in the past. It's not a huge deal but at almost 14 years old I hope this doesn't lead to wanting to change other things about her looks. We are big on helping the kids love who and what they are without changes but on the other hand I don't want to make a big deal about this so she will want it even more. When she ordered them (with permission) I didn't think that much about it but as time goes on it is bugging me. We still have a few days till she can wear them since she already got them taken away for not turning in make up work at school. We aren't going to take them away but I am secretly hoping she doesn't like them. Is that bad? Would you let your 13.8 year old wear them if they wanted to?

My boss uses his bbq to do his Thanksgiving and Christmas turkeys!!!!  Kinda crazy considering the amount of snow we get here.

re: Our last cookout

I had colored contacts in HS and then a study came out about how the dye in them were actually causing major health issues in some people, so my dad told me I couldn't order them anymore. (BTW: I'm sure whatever was wrong with them was fixed a long time ago, so don't worry!). At 13, my parents would have definitely said no, but I don't know what my own reaction as a parent would be...I'm pretty easy going so there's a part of me that thinks I would say yes, but I'm also all for keeping kids acting like kids, so a big part of me would want to say no...Hopefully my girl will be a major tom-boy and just not care, haha! Stick out tongue

re: Our last cookout

We prefer charcoal but we still have a propane tank grill for convenience.  My husband will still grill in the winter as long as it's not snowing, so we never pack it up for good, but we definitely don't enjoy it as often.  I love grilled food.

What is 13.8!?  We track months now???  :)

I agree, I believe in teaching your children to love themselves the way they are.  I love my brown eyes and never wished for blue or green.  However, I do believe you should let your children explore.  Hopefully she'll find she likes herself better as she is - because wearing contacts when you don't need to just seems like a lot of extra effort!
