How much is too much?

I read the Weddingbee Blog all the time; I also often peruse the boards to see what problems other brides are encountering/have encountered with.

Here's one with regards to bridesmaids' dresses. How much is too much for a bridesmaids gown? I have never known any bridesmaid to have her dress paid for by the bride, so...when is the price too much?

I've already had a similar dilemma. I wanted to be mindful of my bridesmaids' budgets, and I did try! I thought, let's go for a custom-made dress by a local dressmaker who charges really cheap. Problem: hassle finding the fabric, and will the dress turn out the way I imagine? I've heard way too many horror stories of this not working out.

I tried looking for a cheap dress online, at B&M stores; I've opened up options of not choosing a dress that was not specifically a bridesmaid dress...but I wasn't super satisfied, and the bridesmaids didn't seem to like the lower-end choices that could work for my wedding.

Anyways...finally, for fun, I asked whoever could meet me at Siri, Inc. in Frisco to come meet me. To my surprise, the experience was more fun than stressful. The dress they chose will come out to around $280. The dresses are made from scratch, so it should not require alterations. And I've heard that Siri is definitely quality! And they all feel that the dress is totally rewearable for after the wedding.

Note: I did ask my bridesmaids what they were willing to pay, and most of them were pretty much willing to pay whatever. And I really did try to find a better and cheaper solution...Don't worry, I'm planning to get them awesome gifts, pay for their makeup, etc. Not sure yet what the etc will include, but I enjoy giving good gifts!

So what are your thoughts on bridesmaids' gowns? I know mine are a bit expensive, but I thought that was average. My sister, who will be my MOH, paid about $1700 to be in her friend's wedding last year. So I don't feel thaaaaaat bad. I know I would pay almost any amount for my sister's or friend's wedding if asked to be a part of it.

No mean comments please. Thanks! I appreciate it!

re: How much is too much?

I don't want my BM to pay more for their dresses than I paid for mine.  Except that I got mine at the $99 sale.  It's near impossible to find a good dress for less than that.  I guess I was extremly lucky.  $280 shouldn't be bad if the girls picked it, and they can wear it again.  I wouldn't stress on it!
