Too much milk?

Posted Wednesday, September 30, 2009 12:55 PM

I'm beginning to get some time during the day since Seth has finally started to take some daytime naps. I think I figured out why he was eating so much.  I believe I have too much milk and a very fast flow. At the beginning of feedings Seth would always latch off and it would seem like he was choking and gagging on the milk because it was coming so fast. He was having alot of spit up also.  I was feeding on both sides per feeding but I think he was getting too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk (the fatty milk). So the foremilk is digested quickly and then he wants to eat again soon. So I started doing 'blocked feedings' recently, where you feed on one side for several feedings, he gets more of the hindmilk and it eventually slows the milk production, so far it's really working. He seems way more satisfied and has been having way less spit-up. So I'm hoping it stays like this.

OMG I have the best MIL and FIL!They bought us a LAPTOP!!! Woohoo! The got it because they are so far away and it has a built in webcam so that they can see Seth more often. How awesome is that? I can't wait to get it! hehe

Other than that not much else is new.  We've been having a few visitors here and there. And I'm finally getting caught up on housework while Seth snoozes during the day. I really have to start packing for the next couple weeks though, for BIL's wedding and our trip home.

OH I wanted to share a funny story. Maybe TMI but it's funny. Remember how I posted about how I was worried I perverted our cats? Well we've really done it now. Danny and I were having sex on the stairs one day and Heine climbed right in between Danny's legs to get in on the action. LOL I burst out laughing and couldn't stop. Danny thought for sure it was because Heine wanted to get up the stairs and saw no other route, but I'm sure he was just curious because we then moved to the bench by our table and Heine then jumped up on the table right near us... Yup definitely have perverted our cats :(

Well I'm off to do some laundry and have some lunch before my LO wakes up! Happy Hump day!

You are hilarious! And I'm glad BFing is going better (not that it was bad before), so you have a little more free time. lol And omg, I wish Lily napped during the day. lol On one hand it is fantastic that she sleeps through the night, but it also means she is awake almost all day long. I get one good nap in (usually 11-1 or so), and then a teeny nap around the time Josh gets off work (3-3:30 or 4), then she is wide awake until 9:30 or so. Whew! lol

LOL perverted cats. Yes I make all animals vacate the bedroom when it's 'happy time'. I don't like a furry audience!! :)

HAH Sara! Seth takes the exact same naps as Lily and is up every ever 2-3 hours at night!  He wasn't napping at all before so this is alot to me!

re: Too much milk?

We don't have stairs in our house, but I will have to keep that in mind for if we have a house with stairs one day.

re: Too much milk?

Is it bad that all I could think about was that you're getting better action than I am and we don't have a little one in the house????  ;)

That's too funny.

re: Too much milk?

So funny!  Today, G was kicked out of the bedroom and after when we were "hanging out" she started scratching at the door.  I was like - i think she knows and now that we're done, she wants in and DH is like no she doesn't - she's just impatient...I'm like suuuure

re: Too much milk?

Dude, you just had a baby and you're already having stair sex!?  You're impressive.

As for the milk, you can also pump before a feeding.  That will get rid of the foremilk and allow for a slower flow for when you feed, then you can use that milk for bottle feedings when you're away or store it for when you feed your baby rice cereal (it will save in the freezer for that long) and use it to mix the cereal instead of water.  That way you don't lose any milk supply and it keeps up for when/if you return to work or your baby needs more from you.

re: Too much milk?

I've always wanted to do stair sex but our carpet is nasty weird shag that's been there forever!  :(  Glad to hear that the breastfeeding is going on well!
