Wow

Seth was only a little fussy last night! Danny picked up some ovol drops yesterday after work and we gave Seth a bit when he was pushing and straining, and voila he farted! He also had a few short naps yesterday evening and then I went up to bed with him to breastfeed lying down at around 9 and we both fell asleep!!! I think he woke up 3 to 4 hours after that and then about every two hours. AND boy did he ever fart alot last night! I think those drops really got him going, thankfully. I got up with Danny at around 5 and now Seth is napping ! Phew. He feeds really well at night, he'll eat a bit then pass out and we go back to sleep, or I'm able to feed lying down and we just both fall asleep afterwards, which is nice. But it's in the morning and during the day the feedings are more complicated because he's awake enough to get angry at my flow, poor thing. He'll eat for a few minutes then squirm around and then latch off crying. I try to pump or hand express the letdown but it still doesn't seem to help it. So I'm really hoping the lactation consultants can help today.

So I'm looking to buy some good parenting books. I have a few like 'What to expect the first year' and 'Breastfeeding made Simple' - which is REALLY good, and another medical one. But I'd like some others, I've heard that the Sears books are really good, any suggestions?

When I was pregnant, I was SO worried that Danny wouldn't find me attractive after giving birth, was I ever wrong lol. I can't believe how into me he has been lately. As soon as Seth is napping, the first thing Danny wants to do is have sex, and he can't stop saying how hot I am, which is weird because most days I wear pjs all day with no makeup and sometimes no shower! AND he actually watched the whole birth down there, I thought it was really going to turn him off of sex for awhile, but no, he was ready to do it pretty much the next day. He always surprises me... It helps though because I probably wouldn't be up for lovin' lately if it weren't for him being so into it. It really has made the last couple weeks less stressful.

Anyways, like I've mentioned a thousand times, we're going to see the lactation consultants today. I'm excited because I just want to get some advice about the flow issues and hopefully they can have some advice on how to get Seth to take the bottle better. Has anyone else had problems introducing the bottle? We've tried a few kinds and the best so far is the playtex bottle. He's not very good at it and he barely eats anything from it. Although, we haven't tried giving it to him lately, so we'll have to get back into trying everyday, but I was scared to lately since he was having problems with gas.

Edmo - I tried replying to you in my last post.  What kind of pacifier did Boston eventually take? We've tried four kinds with Seth and so far he pushes all of them out with his tongue - It's like he has no idea what to do with it.

re: Wow

So gald the Ovol helped! My two friends said it was a life saver for them the first few months,

Nicho will only take the Born Free bottles we tried a bunch of different ones.

Seb was like Danny too in the beginning now we're exhausted from being parents and it isn't so frequent.

re: Wow

My SIL breastfeeds, but my nephew was always a big baby and a big feeder - cleans her out during the day.  So they give him a bottle before bed.  At the start he wouldn't take it from her (because he knows she has the real stuff!!) so my brother would do the last feed with the bottle.  So maybe get Danny to try the bottle feed rather than you?

re: Wow

I know you didn't ask me, but we tried Mam pacifiers and Lily was not into them at all, then tried Playtex Binky (ug, I hate that word), and she will take it, but we are still kind of having to hold it in. It's a pain, but she really doesn't want/need it much.

Hope it goes well with the LCs today, let us know how it goes!

re: Wow

Sam likes the WubbaNub with Soothie paci that my cousin got for him (her daughter was a micro preemie and liked it).  I just tried it this morning, and he took it right away.

re: Wow

Martha likes the Dr Brown's bottles, that is the kind we started using from the beginning and she takes it just fine. A friend of mine recommended the "Breastflow" bottle which I tried with her, but she did not like it. For pacifiers she likes the soothies, and sometimes she'll take the Nuk newborn ones. I have to hold the paci in for about 10 seconds for her to get sucking on it before I let go.

I'll be curious as to what you find out from the LC! I too have issues with the letdown being too forceful at times, where Martha will unlatch and cry/cough. Same thing for us, she is fine at night feeding, but during the day when she is alert she will get upset with the forceful letdown.

re: Wow

Finally my grandma gave me this paci left over at her house (yes, sanitary I know) and it was a MAM.  Not the one for newborns but the one for 6+ months.  I was shocked he took it because the nipple looked so big - but it was exactly what he wanted.  The only one that didn't gag him or that he would spit out of his mouth.

As for Seth - yay!  See, just find what gets him through each moment and you'll find it's a lot easier.

As for parenting books, I don't read any of that stuff.  It's just someone else's experience and someone else's child and situation - nothing will ever relate to your exact situation.  I believe you set some "ground rules" for the kind of parent you'll be, then you go situation to situation and do what your gut tells you.

re: Wow

Glad he had a good night!  When we introduced Jax to a bottle it was the Vent-Aire ones and they were awesome!  They are supposed to help keep babies from sucking in too much air when they eat and therefore reducing gassy uncomfortableness.

I love love love side lying breastfeeding!!!  Kara and I are always falling asleep like this at night in between feedings!

I wish I had some suggestions for books but we pretty much winged it.  If we (okay I) ever had questions I went on forums or asked another parent about it.  I did get Parents magazine though that always had some helpful articles...!
