Q: Sex in water?
You asked: We just got a hot tub, and my husband wants to break it in! My problem is that the last few times we’ve had sex in water, I got really dry after a short while. Is there anything that would help?
A: First let me clarify that I’m not a medical doctor; I’m a doctor of psychology. That said, I have had to research many articles about sexual health. So I know that the various chemicals used in swimming pools and hot tubs cause irritation in many women (and men). They’re much harsher than common shower gels and soaps, and even those can irritate the delicate pH balance of the vagina. This means you can feel dry and irritated when you want to enjoy hot and sexy hot-tub sex!
One thing many people find helpful is to apply a dollop of lubricant (one that you aren’t allergic to, of course) before entering the hot tub. Simply scoop some onto your clean index finger and slip it deep into your vagina to give you ongoing lubrication.
Another solution is to engage in foreplay before you get in the tub so that you’re nice and lubricated. Then don’t hang out for long in the water before you try penetrative sex. Your husband can also try slipping on a lubricated condom just before entering you.
Once you’ve enjoyed some exciting sex, don’t stay in the hot tub. Instead get out and share a lovely, soothing shower together to wash away the chemicals.
