Any advice for having sex during your period?

Q. You asked: I find that I'm especially in the mood when I'm on my period. Any advice for having sex during your period?

A. I'm so glad to hear you like to have sex when you're on your period! Too many women - and men - have inhibitions and hang-ups about this. There are a few definite tips to use during period-sex.

First, positions where you're on your back, or side, lead to less likelihood of staining your sheets. So you can use 'classic missionary', or 'the ploughman' where he kneels over you, and your knees are bent into his chest, (obviously you're lying on your back) or 'unfold the flower' where again he kneels over you, you're on your back, and your legs are slung over his shoulders.

Or you can use the 'classic spoons' where you're both on your sides, he's behind you, and facing your back. Any of these work well. Also if you have a bath rather than a standing shower - you'll find the water pressure of sitting in a bath always seems to "slow down" your menstrual flow for a little while. So if you enjoy a nice bath and then slip between the sheets, your flow won't be at its peak. Also, it's always handy to put away your best linen set during the week of your period and put your older sheets on your bed.

My husband and I just have a designated "sex blanket", so we don't have to worry about the sheets. :)

My husband is an American Indian and we follow the old ways, called the red road. During a womans moontime, period, we are at our most powerful. To have contact, even a hug, is unwise at that time.  We are not to even prepare each other food. I spend as much time by myself as I can reading, resting, and praying. I too would love to have sex at that time. We feel so much more alive at that time. Our practices are very beautiful though. Imagine being able to just rest during that week and not have to take care of anyone. It is easy to see how natural that is. The only thing I miss is sex but I don't want to mess up his power or mine.

Many people have initially thought that moontime traditions are sexist. Upon understanding the great respect we are given as givers of life it becomes more accepted. There are a few websites that have information. I wish more women had the freedom to practice. It makes me sad to see friends have to go to work when they are so tired and have such cramps. I just have to admit that I get a little jealous that they can still have sex.

We use a towel that is designated for only that purpose.  We just lay it on the bed and that way we don't have to worry about the sheets.

We just lay down a towel, too (black towels work well for this purpose! :)) or have sex in the shower.

My husband has a problem with blood, so he almost won't touch me at that time. At least he is considerate when I am tired or have terrible cramps though.
