Is it unhygienic or unhealthy to shave or trim your pubic hair?

Q: Is it unhygienic or unhealthy to shave or trim your pubic hair?

No, it’s not necessarily unhygienic or unhealthy as long as you use common sense. Use a clean razor and shave gently to avoid nicking the skin. Many women’s razors are now contoured and flexible in a way that makes intimate shaving easier.

Many women are hesitant to shave or trim because the regrowth may be itchy or unpleasantly sensitive for a few days. Nevertheless, the benefits can be fantastic. Many women report greater sensitivity to touch leading to more powerful orgasms when their pubic hair has been removed. Some men also like a “shaven haven” because they get to see their partner's delicate -- and what they consider beautiful -- genitals.

Waxing is a great alternative to shaving. The pubic hair is pulled out at the root so it takes longer to grow back and is often finer when it reappears. If you don’t want to go to a salon, most pharmacies and supermarkets sell at-home waxing kits. For more permanent results, try electrolysis or another type of laser technique.

I tried shaving there. I loved feeling clean but it would get itchy as the hair grew back in, so I would leave the "landing strip" or "stripper strip" whatever you would like to call the thin patch of hair right above, but the actual lips would be clean. That got rid of the itching, however my husband found that the stubbles hurt him, and would only have sex with a condom. Neither one of us liked that, so now I wax. MUUUUUUCCCHHHHHH better. It feels so smooth, and it lasts so much longer, plus the hair does grow in much thinner, the only problem is that it hurts. I take 2 or 3 advils before I go and that helps. Since it is such a sensitive area I do not recommend using an at home waxing kit. Hope that helps

I have been shaving everything in that area for like 5 years now. I like it and he likes it better. I only have to shave down there once a week but I haven't seen any problem with itching because of the hair growth back in.

The reason I started shaving is because I only used to wear pads and would find that the hair would get nasty and matted, so I started shaving.

I feel so much cleanier and prettier down there.

Waxing??!!  No Way.  Smileyt8 is lucky to only shave once a week, I have to every other day or so to keep it smooth.  My husband and I like to shower and bathe together so it is fun for us to shave each other.  Every one mentions that their husbands prefer a shaved region, but does anyone's husband also shave?  If not they should give it a shot..... MUCH BETTER LADIES!!!

re: Is it unhygienic or unhealthy to shave or trim your pubic hair?

I actually just tried waxing for the first time in June. Don't get me wrong, it hurt. But the results were so worth it. There was no hair for about three weeks and when it grew back it was not itchy, I had no ingrown hairs and the hair was so soft my husband could not feel it. Also, it hurts less each time I go back. Just make sure you go to someone who is good. It really depends on who does it.

I am removing the bikini area with laser technology from Sona Medspa. I did 2 treatments already and I see results; the hair is finer and it only grows in thin patches.  And I still have 4 more treatments to go. For the rest of the hair on the lips and above I trim with my bikini Remington clippers. I used to shave with a razor but when the hair grew back it would itch really bad because my hair is really coarse and I would have ingrown hair bumps.  My husband loves my results and yes I make him shave his region.  It makes a big difference!!!!

The only draw-back I've found is that if you're prone to yeast infections, shaving/waxing can make it worse.  The hair actually helps protect you from foreign bacteria that can cause a yeast infection.  I've found I have to keep the hair, but can trim it close & keep it managable.

Depilatory is another option. No stubble and itch, but without the pain and bruising of waxing. (Yes, I do bruise very easily, and waxing, even  pro job, leaves me with bright purple welts for about a week.)

re: Is it unhygienic or unhealthy to shave or trim your pubic hair?

I shaved for years (like 15+) and I think you get used to it and it doesn't itch after so long. But don't waste your time or money on waxing, get the laser hair removal. I've had my 5 treatments and like waxing it hurts to get it done, but it is well worth it. I'm talkin' baby soft with no sight of hair folacles (sp?) and never have to shave or wax and they even left my landing strip. I'm so hooked, I'm doing my armpits now and then my legs. It's pricey, but if you consider $80 per wax, it more than justifies itself. So just save up and get the laser, ladies...your man will love it!

I shave down there about every-other day, and have found it to be a success since being married. I get red bumps oiften though, and dont find it as smooth as I would like it to be. Any suggestions?

I use an electric shaver and that it keeps it from itching.  My husband loves it.

re: Is it unhygienic or unhealthy to shave or trim your pubic hair?

Thanks ladies! Yeah, I shave it once a week, but I can't do it more often because it's just too sensitive, although the hair grows back quickly. I've been considering the laser removal and my husband and I have discussed it. Now I'm convinced. As soon as we have the money, I'm getting it done. Thanks so much for your advice!! Oh, and hubby shaves his too. Lucky me!

re: Is it unhygienic or unhealthy to shave or trim your pubic hair?

I have been shaving everything for about 4 years but have recently gotten tired of the itchy re-regrowth and have started growing a "landing strip" back. I would love to try waxing but have always been worried about trying it at home for such a sensitive area. Any suggestions on what to use?

re: Is it unhygienic or unhealthy to shave or trim your pubic hair?

I have super thick hair so my one brazillian wax didn't last too long. it just didn't end up being worth the pain for me but I understand why other women love it!

I shave once every few weeks or so and to avoid the bumps, use a fragrance free lotion twice a day for the first few days. it should prevent ingrown hairs and the sort. I've heard the exfoliating works as well!

nad's bikini wax kit w/out cloth strips is the best....v. few ingrown hairs, and the heat of the wax opens up pores bigger so it doesn't hurt as bad as other waxing methods. much sexier than the 70's look...gets him everytime!

re: Is it unhygienic or unhealthy to shave or trim your pubic hair?

My bf and I are talking about getting married when he gets back from Afghanistan and we are waiting until our wedding night.  I want to wax but I am so afraid lol.  I am a private person when it comes to things like this so I am nervous to actually have someone do this for me.  I  know I can't do it myself because my skin is too sensitive and  I bruise when i get my legs waxed.  LOL What words of wisdom do you have for me? lol
