Preparation for Parenthood (long post! not for the weak stomachs!)

Posted Wednesday, March 19, 2008 6:24 PM

So last night, I picked rob up from his store, we went to dinner (awesome greek restaurant), and then decided to go grocery shopping. Now you might all think, ok, no big deal... but, i am almost embarassed to say, we have not done a major grocery shopping i'd say since january... our fridge looks WORSE than a poor college kid's fridge and minus the beer! Basically we had condiments, water, 8 cartons of rice milk (dont ask, my DH loves it, i say ewww) and 2 lemons left. Definitely not enough to make a meal out of! its not that i haven't wanted to go or i haven't thought about going but my rationale has been this... when i get home from work i am absolutely starving... grocery shopping on an empty stomach is never a good idea. in an effort to not buy junk, i just don't go. kind of twisted i know, because then we go out to eat and eat junk... hahahaha, im whack... i know...

ANYWAY.. off we went to A&P to stock up... Now, i dont know how many of you ladies take DH shopping with you, but i know that i just can't take MY DH grocery shopping. The guy doesn't look at labels, prices or sales... he just grabs grabs grabs! Soooo... $430 LATERRRR... we load up the car and head home. (You are thinking $400 grocery shopping for 2 people, are you mad woman?! I rationalize this because i divide it over the past 2 months of barely having food in the house and being on the "last" of everything... and this grocery shopping should last us at least a month or two. Plus, DH had to buy himself these anti-wrinkle moisturizers... don't ask)

OK so back to the story... we come home around 9, to find that while we were gone all day, the boys (dogs) decided to have themselves a grand ol party... they took the wee wee pad and ripped it up into a gazillion pieces. all over the living room. that was fun thing to clean #1. i clean up, unload, put everything away (DH helped). Once we were done we decided to break into this yummy Haagen Dazs "Caramelized Pear with Pecan" ice cream (it was soooo worth the $6 and the calories!!!). rob decides to give the boys some ice cream as a treat (for wrecking the living room?). Promptly after this, Rio goes inside and drops possibly the largest turd I've ever seen him drop. He is a 4 pound dog and i swear, this poo was at least a pound! That was clean up #2 (DH did that one). He had just  finished cleaning that up, turned around and see that Scooter has had diahrea (sp?) on the other side of the room (WTF!) Luckily that was on a wee wee pad, so it was easy cleanup (#3) but poor little guy had some um... remnants on his fur... so into the bath both of them went!

I finish all that, settle down to watch some Jon&Kate on tivo, with little scooter by my side, and BLEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHH... Yup, scooter tossed his cookies (or rather his ice cream) all over my leg, the blanket, and the couch! (I'm gonna call that cleanup 4 thru 6... hahaha, are ya laughing yet???) i start screaming and of course Darling Husband comes in and starts laughing. Nice huh...

we think what happened was that when rob cleaned the floor from rio's mess, he used this lysol with bleach, and it was really strong - and we think scooter may have licked it, or maybe the smell was too strong for him... or possibly the ice cream didnt agree with him... so who knows, cuz rio was totally fine...

so i put the dogs in their beds, and go to shower (at 11pm), and as im getting out, scooter pukes again, in his little bed, partly ON rio this time (what are we on cleanup 7?) so i take him into the kitchen make him drink some water... he goes back into bed... we turn out the lights, i hear him run to the hallway and puke again!!!! i did feel very bad for the poor little guy, all scared and not knowing what was happening to him...

he's all better today by the way... all happy, running, playing and STARVING! me on the other hand... not so happy, not running and certainly in no mood to play! (however, not starving as we now have a normally well stocked fridge!) i told DH if this isn't preparing us for parenthood, then i dont know what will!

Wow, that really sounds like quite the adventure.  This is why I choose no pets.  Matt wants a cat.  I love cats, and I love dogs too.  My thing is, I love other people's dogs and cats.  I hate when they need to eat and go, and occasionally throw up.  I would love the companionship, but then I remember that I am slightly OCD, and if they got fur on anything, I would probably follow them around all day on my hands and knees with a lint brush.  I'm glad Scooter feels better.

That was quite a night you had!!! Just a few weeks ago my doggie, Petey, had hemorragic gastroenteritis and let me tell you that was a lot of fun!!!  Not only was he puking but he had bloody diarrhea.  Luckily he was okay after a whole day at the vets office and a whole bunch of meds.  So i know how you feel.  Glad scooter is better!!

Oh man.. what a night! I really really want a dog, but after reading this, I'm ok with putting it off for a little while longer! :)

re: Preparation for Parenthood (long post! not for the weak stomachs!)

I spend a lot at the grocery, and I go weekly.

I can't take my husband either because he HATES going down each aisle and I have to or I'll forget a million things (even with my handy list and coupons).  He hates grocery shopping, so it works out that I find it therapeutic and enjoy doing it alone.

As for your pups, they sound young?  Are they babies?  If so, it gets better.  We couldn't feed our dogs any human food (my husband was always sneaking them some even though I am against it) until they were about a year and a half because they always threw it up.  We still limit it considerably, except for fruit.  They love fruit!
