The adventures of Jewish newlywed navigating through the wonderful world of married life.

A Rose by Any Other Name

The other day I was thinking of the end of the chick flick "Mystic Pizza" when Jo Jo is sitting in the car with her fiancé Bill and she says that nothing about her life will change now. Then he says "except your name," and the camera pans from him to her and you see her wearing a wedding dress.

Last week I sent away and received the Bridal Name Change Kit (a CD and book) full of tips and forms on how to go about changing your name. The whole process seems so strange.I know many brides out there dreamed of the day they would take a new last name. But I like mine a lot. So, like many of my friends, I'm keeping my last name professionally and turning it into my middle name personally.

In most cases it never happens that the groom takes the bride's name -- could you imagine all the dead sexist pigs out there rolling over in their graves if that were to become the norm?

I've spoken with recently married women who say it is so hard getting used to being called Mrs. Hisname - because Mrs. Hisname is his mother. Oy! And now I will be sharing a name with my mother-in-law.... would that be the epitome of a mixed blessing?

In less than six months I will be getting several new things, among them a new name. I will still be the same sweet Shoshie everyone knows -- and like JoJo, the only thing that is going to change will be my name. And my new husband will still call me by it sometimes-- because no matter what happens, I'll always be a Mylastname. Big Smile

Love it! Two points:

A. Loved Mysic Pizza

B. Keeping my name as well.  I'm going for the hyphenated surname.
