"Can you tell me which of my friends is on the list so I know who I can talk to about the wedding?"
This was a request I received this morning from my grandmother as I was heading out the door to come to work. I looked back at her and said: "everyone in your havurah, everyone in my havurah and everyone in your dinner group. Does that help."
She said, "I'll try to be careful at mahjongg this afternoon."
I said: "Well, maybe you can talk about things other than the wedding."
She said: "They all ask about it."
I said: "Change the topic."
She said: "I wish we could invite X, Y and Z. If we are inviting J we have to have B."
I said: "We can. If 75 people we invited promise they won't show up?"
She said: "I'll call P or T and see if they are coming."
I said: "Well, maybe we can put the buffet table in the foyer."
She said: "Or lose the dance floor."
I said: "I'd rather lose the buffet."

Later (in the car) I relayed this conversation to my fiancé.
He said: "We have no more room. People are going to be eating in the hallway."
I said: "Well, we can always take J and J off the list."
He said: "Sounds good to me. Then we can add G."
I said: "Excellent… now we're at 314."
As you can see, we've made a lot of progress.
Last night we talked to some friends who were married many years ago and had a similar dilemma with the guest list at their wedding. Something tells me this is a universal ill and, if so, there should be a universal cure for it.
Dear XXX,
We really want you to be at our wedding. Unfortunately, we can not accommodate everyone we want – even though we've known you longer than the following people (fill in names) and know that you would be so much more fun to hang out with than them. We hope you do not hold it against us as it is (fill in name) 's fault that we couldn't invite you.
Love, Shoshana and Adam
The moral of this story: Try not to accumulate a lot of friends until AFTER you get married and encourage your parents and grandparents to do the same.
