The lead story on tonight's 11 p.m. news will be: Bride Succumbs to Boxes. Rescuers found tulle, a list and a shoe under mounds of containers labeled "DVDs" and "toiletries."
OK, so maybe it isn't quite that bad – I mean, I can still sort of see the floor of my bedroom. But the overall effect is far from pretty. This month I'll be moving out of my grandmother's home and into Adam's house. Basically it means the wedding planning is put on pause. For the last seven years, everything I own has been in one bedroom and one bathroom – and I underestimated how much I had accumulated. I figured everything would fit into one of five categories: books, movies, collectables, clothes and toiletries. I was so wrong.
Adam came over the other night to help pack up my movies. I'm a HUGE movie fan, so the job took four small/medium-sized boxes. Meanwhile, yours truly wrapped up breakable mugs and figurines in bubble wrap and newspaper (as a Disneyphile, I own a great deal of stuff).
Then I moved on to the papers on top of and under my desk (I'm trying to toss as much as possible – do I really need a Jewish Journal from 2004?). I plan to put my clothes inside several suitcases (I have to move them anyway, they might as well be filled with something). The hardest part will be my bookshelf – which seems to have taken on a life of its own. After that comes the "miscellaneous" stuff I hadn't counted on. Yuck.
The good news I can move it over a bit at a time as I start my new life – the bad news is I only have till the end of the month when my grandmother moves out. As I pack, so many questions run through my head: Where did all this stuff come from? How could one person have accumulated so much? Will there be room at Adam's for me to put it all away? Why do I need (fill in the blank)?
I'm sure everything will be fine and dandy and boxed by the end of next weekend. I got a good sign today: I came back from my hair-do trial and was greeted with one of my favorite movies: "My Best Friend's Wedding." It's a good thing it was on; my copy is in a box ... somewhere.
