Just another New Year's Eve

Posted Wednesday, September 12, 2007 2:01 AM

Don't look so sad, it's not so bad you know.
It's just another night, that's all it is,
It's not the first, it's not the worst you know,
We've come through all the rest, we'll get through this.

Yes I referenced a Barry Manilow song -- but it works in this case.

It's hard to spend New Year's Eve without the person you love.

When 5768 begins Wednesday night, I will be in Chicago -- and my fiance will be 1700 miles away in Los Angeles.

I've been spending Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish new year) with my family in Chicago every year since college. Last year I went home -- but I wasn't engaged yet. I love being with my bobie and zayde for the holidays. I see just about everyone in my family as most of them live in the area.

I've spent the last two secular New Year's Eves with Adam -- romantic nights that started with dinner and ended with a kiss.

The Jewish New Year doesn't include a countdown, champagne or a Rose Parade the next day (there's just a parade of people who go to the nearby branch of the Chicago river to "toss" their sins). I'll spend most of Thursday and Friday in services -- I even get to read from the Torah on the second day.

The good news is the hype surrounding 5768 is WAY lower than that surrounding 2008.

This Wednesday I'll call Adam and wish him a "happy new year" -- but I'll have to settle for kissing the picture of the two of us I carry with me when I travel.... and we'll always have Barry:

It's just another New Year's Eve,
It's just another Auld Lang Syne,
But when we're through this New Year
You'll see, we'll be just fine. Smile
