My First Doily

Posted Sunday, January 06, 2008 4:53 PM

No, that isn't a typo. Today, I talked to my grandmother, who informed me that she bought me a doily to wear on my head when I go to services at the synagogue. Married Jewish women in Conservative and more religious services cover their heads. Some really religious women where a sheitel (a wig). My hair is too cute, so that was out of the question. Some women opt for hats. While that is a stylish option, my volume of hair prevents " -- that as an option (with the exception of a baseball cap, which I absolutely cannot wear to shul).

So it is the doily.

The one my grandmother bought has a comb, "so it will stay on your keppe" -- grandma said.

I told Adam about it and he said, doesn't the ring tell everyone you are married. I told him: "Yes -- but you can't see my ring while I'm sitting down."

In more religios services, it is only the married men who wear a tallit (prayer shawl). So now Adam is part of that category, too.

We're a married couple -- and now everyone can tell by looking at us ... well, everyone at Shabbat services, that is. :)

re: My First Doily

I thought that after a Bar Mitzvah, the tallit is worn for Shabbat morning services.  When does this rule not apply?  And how is it different for married men?

In Reform and Reconstructionist and Conservative, you do wear a tallit after your bar mitzvah. In traditional and Orthodox services, you only wear a tallit if you are 1) reading Torah or 2) married

OMG...I  am so glad I found your blog. It's like reading my own life story. Except that in my synagogue, the honor of bearing a talit or doily comes with becoming a bar/bat mitzvah, so I've been donning the doily for some 17 years now. The funny part is when you forget its there and go home and you are still wearing it hours later.
