I’m Trippin’!

By Jeanine

So I just found out that I’ll be taking an impromptu trip -- to New Mexico! Albuquerque, to be exact. Being a New England girl at heart, I was a little skeptical at first. I never think any place I visit is going to be as good as my home in the Northeast, and I’ve honestly never even considered taking a trip to New Mexico. But now that I’ve had a few days to sit with it, I am so unbelievably excited. It’s actually quite strange, since I don’t know very much about New Mexico or even anyone who’s been to New Mexico, but I think that’s why I am looking forward to it -- the idea of exploring a place that’s so totally different from everything I’m used to. I’ll only be there for three days, but already I find myself looking online during my spare time for things to do and see. I’ve heard hot air ballooning is big down there, so I’m definitely going to try to see one of those  -- maybe I’ll face my fear heights and actually take a ride. I’m also looking forward to the scenery and the food.

If any of you are from New Mexico (or even the Southwest) or have ever visited, please be my virtual tour guide -- tell me what I should do, where I should go, everything! I’ll post pictures from my trip when I return and hopefully inspire some of you to take a spontaneous vacation of your own.

PS: Thanks for all the great ideas for the baby shower gift. I'm still deciding between a few of your suggestions, but I'll let you know what I chose in the next blog.

I'm from New Mexico, southeast corner, Roswell-Artesia area. New Mexico is so beautiful and there is so much to see, I hope you get to take it all in. And to the girl who said there is mostly Tex-Mex around here or in the Southwest, you will definately not find that in New Mexico. Authentic Mexican food that can't be beat. One of my favorite things about my state is the food. Have a great trip!!

re: I’m Trippin’!

I'm from NM. The whole state pretty much. & I was definitely going to recommend the Sandia tram & Nob hill - it's colorful. =) The balloon fiesta is SO much fun if you're there during that time, but get there early (like 6 am early) because the mass lift off is the best part. I'm more familiar with Santa Fe and would highly recommend going there if you can. It's smaller, so not as mcuh of the typical city stuff. If you make it up there, definitely try to go to Tomacita's, they have the best blue corn enchiladas ever & of course great green chile. Canyon Road is 1 mile of nothing but art galleries & bistros if you're into the art aspect of the state, Plus there's always the plaza, where some of the native american artisans sit & sell their pieces (mostly jewelry). & Loretto chapel just off the square with the crazy miracle staircase. It's touristy, but pretty cool to see once. Jackalope is a really cool place to spend some time. It's a HUGE imports market that you can spend hours in. Sorry, I might not have been much help with Albuquerque, but go to Santa Fe for at least a day. Oh & Carlsbad is about 5 hours of the most mind numbing drive away, the caverns aren't really even in Carlsbad & there is NOTHING else there, except some really good catfish. I went to high school there can you tell? Anyway, I hope you enjoy the culture and diversity there & have a GREAT trip.
