The Portal to Hell is in My Basement!

By Heather

One of our upcoming home improvement projects is to finish our basement and make it into more living space. My DH and I started to take some basic measurements so we could begin our planning. In order to do this, we had to remove some of the old wood paneling that covered some of the walls to see what was behind it.

Now basements are by nature creepy, but I think mine takes the cake. As we pulled off some of the paneling, we found this:

What the heck is this??? We're afraid to see what's hiding behind it. It looks like some kind of sealed portal. It's about 6 feet high and 5 feet wide and all I've been wondering is if there's dead bodies back there. Then again, I have an over-active imagination. I'm going to look through this gallery for ideas on what we can do with the wall.

Have any of you ever discovered something weird in your house like this? What do you think this was for?

re: The Portal to Hell is in My Basement!

We moved into a 100+ year old farmhouse that my grandpa was born in (we could really use an extreme home makeover! but that's another story). It has a basement under the oldest part of the house and a crawlspace under the newer parts of the house. Anyway, my dad (this was before I was married) was crawling around in the crawlspace and came across a rotted skeleton of a cat. I guess it was pretty disturbing because Dad didnt want to go down there anymore and was more than willing to give that responsibility to my husband when we got married. Apparently when my uncle lived in the house with his family he put a cat in the basement to catch mice and forgot about it. Poor thing.

It could also be an old fireplace opening that was filled in... I work in an 1800 era building and it kind of looks like a couple of the fireplaces here...
