Lots to Learn
by Kristen
Monday night, OH and I decided to go see the movie Borat, the end result of our first serious, blow-out fight. The movie, though a comedy, is sort of offensive if not taken as such. It chronicles a Kazakh reporter’s journey through America, and the ending admittedly makes a serious statement about American life. Anyhow, back to the fight.
It started at a party on Friday night, when OH overheard me mention I was nervous about taking him to the movie, since he’s Jewish and actually from the former region of Russia that is now Kazakhstan--two of the most mocked issues in the film. After a run-in a few years ago with a then-boyfriend’s Greek mother about a similarly sensitive issue, I figured I should play it safe this time. He’s not super sensitive or anything, but why start an argument or make him unnecessarily uncomfortable. Or so I thought.
OH told me he was MORE offended that I thought he’d take offense to the movie (did you follow that?), and ended with the comment “I feel like you don’t even understand me--I can’t believe you feel like that.”
After a restless night (and OH on the couch, which I must now agree is never, ever a good idea--never go to bed angry!), we talked it through the next day. Everything is fine now, but I did realize we have a lot of sharing and talking and learning to do. We’ve been together for a year and a half, but there are so, so many things I have left to learn. Even thought our argument was upsetting, I’m sort of in awe of the man I’m with. Sounds crazy, but it renewed our relationship.
Do you ever think there is a time when you feel like you know someone completely? Is it when you decide to get married? What surprises you in your relationships? I’m excited for what lies ahead.
Also, I plan to take this quiz weekly until my score improves. (I won’t share how many I got wrong the first time). I guess I still DO have a lot to learn.
