Who Drives You?

by Katie

Over the past few months, my husband and I have chronicled our car “road tests” for The Nest, where we've actually taken a car for a weekend and driven it, writing up the pros and cons. You can read them here if you're interested.

We live in New York City, so we don't have a car of our own, and we probably drive only six times a year. And what I've realized is that by living here, I've slowly become overly anxious about driving. Any time we go on a road trip, I pass the keys right to my husband. I have no interest in maneuvering around high way traffic or trying to navigate unknown territory. And he's really good at it.

But this disappoints me. I feel like it makes me seem and feel weak. It's not how I was raised either. In my fam, my mom always drove. She still does. And she's the one who taught me. But I grew up in a small city, and everywhere I wanted to go was accessible by city roads, no highways necessary. So I now dread anything more than a 4 lane (2-way) road.

Who does most of the road trip driving in your couple? Who is the better driver between you?

I know this could lead to the debate on whether men or women are better drivers. I personally think my husband is a better driver than I am, but that's because he's a more confident driver.

PS- how was your Thanksgiving? Mine was great! We had a group of seven and it was a great size. Everyone was really comfortable the whole weekend, and even though we missed all the guests who couldn't come, it was nice to not feel like we needed to host all weekend. I took a 2 hour nap every day! It was great.

re: Who Drives You?

My husband does most of the driving, mostly because I think he feels like a wimp in the passenger seat. On our road trips to Wyoming and Oklahoma/Texas (from Indiana) he has done all the driving and it "drives" me nuts! It's a two day drive and I get bored to death, let me drive too! Fortunately Brad trusts me with the navigation and makes me feel somewhat useful when we're on an unknown route. As far as being the better driver ... For getting there faster, he is, for local driving I think I am. He doesnt follow the rules of the road. It scares me when he thinks he has the right-of-way when he's turning left. It's definetly different to think about not even owning a car. That's not possible in our town. Have a lovely day
