Admit It - Have You Ever Re-Gifted?

By Lori

I watched this segment on the news recently about re-gifting. You know... where you've been given something as a present that is of no use to you, so you re-wrap it and pass it along to someone else. Has this actually become an acceptable form of gift-giving?

As for how to "properly" re-gift, they suggested removing all previous cards from the item - like, how inappropriate to give someone a Christmas gift that had a "Happy Birthday" card inside. Another idea was keeping a list of who has given you what over the year - so you don't re-gift to the same person who gave you the original item! And, of course, to not re-gift anything you've actually used... unopened packages only.

I dunno if I am buying into the whole re-gifting idea. Isn't the thrill of the hunt what makes gift-giving fun? Maybe it makes sense if you've been inundated with bottles of wine brought by visitors, and you take one of those unopened bottles to someone else's house. But anything else would seem kinda weird to me!

So... admit it now. Has anyone re-gifted?

The only kind of re-gifting I do is re-gifting to the good will or salvation army. My Mother-in-law has the knack for giving me the most unappealing items... whether it's home decor that I wont use, or t-shirts that are absolutely hidious, or as with this Christmas an obnoxious towel and hot pad for the kitchen that just wont make an appearance. They go straight from the gift box to the donation box. Though this is done behind the scense without hurting any feelings or making her feel uncomfortable. Have a lovely day

I have re-gifted. The Christmas after we were married, we had received too many wineglasses (including ones we didn't register for) and this really nice totally not our style ivory throw. So I gave my brother a set of wineglasses (along with a purchased gift) and my mother the throw (along with a purchased gift) for Christmas that year. My brother had just moved into his own place and needed the glasses and the throw was completely my mom's style.
