There's Something In My Attic!

Home ownership is amazing, although it definitely comes with its own set of problems. We have been in our house for almost two years now and we have already made friends with a plumber, an electrician, a contractor, a landscaper, the oil burner techs, the cesspool folks, and now, an exterminator.
Yes folks, there's mice in our attic!
We heard them a couple of times scurrying around and our cats were totally freaking out. We didn't know what to do, and we didn't know what it was at the time so we hoped it would just go away on its own! But the other day I heard it again and asked DH if he would call someone to check it out. As it turns out, mice in the attic is fairly common and not a huge deal to get rid of -- easier than squirrels actually!
The whole thing still leaves me squeamish. Just... eww.
Have any of you had to deal with something similar? Do you call in the pros or try to handle it yourself? Are you better off renting than buying?
