Work It Out!

By Jeanine

So as most of you who read our blog know, I moved this weekend! My new place is great (aside from all the boxes everywhere) and now all I have to do is clean-up my old place a bit and I’ll be done! It’s all very exciting -- except for the fact that I am SO sore! My dad and I did the bulk of the moving yesterday, which entailed bringing all my stuff down from a fourth floor walk-up and then up to my third floor walk-up. I’ll admit it was great exercise, but I am suffering now. I didn’t realize how out of shape I am. I’ve always considered my daily commute (up and down the subway stairs, two blocks to work, uphill walk home, etc.) more than enough exercise, but after yesterday and the insane soreness I am experiencing now, I am beginning to reconsider. I used be in great shape -- I was captain of my soccer team, for goodness sake! – and a few trips up and down stairs wouldn’t have affected me one way or the other. Boy have things changed, though. Last night, as I lay awake debating whether or not to take something to ease my aches, I was thinking what are some little things I could do to sort of get myself in better shape. I’ll be honest and admit that I have no intention of joining a gym because in my opinion it’s not worth it, but there have to be other ways to exercise. I’ve taken a few yoga classes so I do that in the morning and before bed and the exercises in this article seem doable, but do you have any other suggestions? And for those of you who do work out, how long before this soreness goes away?!?!

I also exercise at home a little, gyms may have fancy machines, but home is cheap and I can make a fool of myself in private. On nice days I walk or bike (no running, I cant breathe) on yucky or really cold days I stay inside and do pilates or strength exercises. But yesterday I built a huge snowman and all that squatting and bending over made my butt muscles sore! Hoe pathetic is that! I cant even build a snowman! So I'm ready to gear up my routine too.

re: Work It Out!

Moving is actually REALLY good exercise.  If you've ever watched "The Biggest Loser," you'll remember that they moved furniture for one of their workouts this season.  So - it doesn't necessarily mean that you're out of shape!  I actually do go to a gym - but only because I work for a college, it's free and I can go at lunch.  But before that - I was doing exercises from a book called "The Abs Diet."  I still do those exercises, but now I run on a treadmill, too.  But when I moved this summer , I was sore and bruised - and actually pulled my calf muscle, so I feel your pain!
