Finding a Good Doctor?

By Anja

Do you have a doctor you love? How did you find him/her?

I thought I was all settled in and living a routine life in New York until I came down with an achy fever last week. It's the first time I've gotten really sick since I moved here just over a year ago, and at first I thought I wouldn't have to deal with it, but it's been seven days of achy fevers, coughs, and a very swollen throat -- and it's definitely time to see a doc.

So I'm in the middle of trying to find a doctor in New York, and you would think that it would be easy with so many choices but it's completely overwhelming!

That is, when I run a search on the insurance website, I come up with more than 100 hits in a 5-mile radius of my address. How am I supposed to know who's good and who isn't?

And what sort of qualifications should I look for when researching? Is it better for her to be associated with a major hospital, or does one get more attention at a more private practice?

At this point, I feel like I might as well just go alphabetical down the list calling until someone has an available appointment.

Has anyone else had to deal with finding a new doctor at the last minute? How did you do it? Thanks for you ideas!

Have you tried calling the physician referral number of your local hospital? That's how I found my OBGYN when we moved and I love her.

re: Finding a Good Doctor?

I found a GREAT doctor that I love-- I live in NYC as well, and went through a slew of terrible doc's (gen and spec) until I finally found one of each I love!  My rec:  find out who the "best" doctor is by word of mouth (from people who actually get sick,  b/c healthy people don't know) or from industry magazines or whatever.  Find out who your boss's dr. is... usually people high up have good health care :)  however you do it, once you find a good doc., find out who their doctors are for anything else you might need... that's always a good sign!

Hi, I live in NYC as well. I work near a hospital and found both my gen and GYN that way. Page me on the NYC board and I can give you my OBGYN's name. NY Magazine did a special a few years back on the best Drs. for specialities as well as the best hospitals.

NY Magazine has a "Best Doctors" section online that gives you the names of the best doctors in their field. That's how I've found all of my doctors and they are excellent.

re: Finding a Good Doctor?

Since i am a RN, I understand the extreme importance about geeting a good MD. I would suggest getting a list of 5 or 6 potential MD's and call a local hospital, ask for the Med-Surg department and ask for a Registered nurse. Tell her you are new to the area and you are searching for a PCP, give her the names of your selection and see  what she says. She should be able to steer you in the right direction. After hearing her suggestion, I would call another Med-surg floor (if they have more than 1) if not then call their Telemetry or ICU floor and do the same thing. You should be able to get a good MD from talking to the nurses.
