Comfort Foods, Diet Secrets, and Doctors' Scales -- Oh My!

By Heather

I have discovered the best diet of all this past week. Catch an upper-respitory infection. Not only do I not have an appetite, but the crazy antibiotics the doctor put me on are giving me the runs, so nothing is being digested anyway!

All kidding aside, I'm sick. I can't remember the last time I had a 102.3 degree fever. Decades ago perhaps? Now it has progressed into a non-stop coughing fit with body aches and pains galore. I'm working from home on my office couch as I write this. I have to report, however, that I have lost 3 pounds since I started my *real* diet. Woo hoo!

My DH has been sick with the same thing -- which means there's nobody to take care of us! My Mother-In-Law has been a saint. She made us chicken soup, picked up some things at the grocery store for us, took us to the doctor (we couldn't drive ourselves), and has called in to check up and see if we needed anything. I don't know how we would have survived otherwise.

I hate the Doctor's scale. Why the heck do they insist on weighing you with *all* of your clothes on, your shoes, and I was even holding my purse?!?! And no, the nurse didn't even take off a couple of pounds to make up for it. *sigh*

I've been indulging a bit in my favorite comfort foods -- although to be honest I can only have a few bites before I'm turned off to it. I have no appetite and it sucks. Yesterday for dinner I had a twice-baked potato. Today I had split pea soup with ham for lunch. Even the few bites I can get down are good and comforting. And this recipe looks like a crazy mac & cheese. Yummy.

What are some of your favorite comfort foods or ways to feel better when you're sick?

When I was sick as a kid, my mother would always get me a coffee cabinet (called a frappe or milkshake anywhere other than Rhode Island).  That's still what I crave when I'm down.

It all depends on what I'm sick with. My mom was great when I was growing up, though, and let me have whatever I wanted when I was sick and couldn't eat. Her philosophy was "If you're not gonna eat anything but that, I'd rather you eat" and "If it's gonna come pack up, you may as well enjoy it going down!"

Although, when I was in the hospital and hadn't eaten for a week and a half, all I wanted was a bowl of cheerios with a glass of apple juice, and some cheese.

SUGAR, SUGAR, SUGAR!  Most people lose thier appetite when they are sick... I TOTALLY have an unsatiable sweet tooth. I HATE getting sick -- it makes me gain weight. Who knows why!

I know this may sound gross, but my grandmother and mother used to force me to swallow a spoonful of lemon and honey. She would scoop the honey out of the jar, squeeze some lemon juice on it and make me eat. I HATE honey, but I did it anyway because it always made me feel better within a day or two. Get well soon!!

Soup is my biggest comfort food and diet crasher.  Something creamy like clam chowder or brocolli cheddar.  Kills me every time.

I hope that you are feeling better soon!
