Our Bedroom Makeover

By Heather

This is my bedroom and I hate it.

After being featured in this article, I took the ideas that were suggested and started to plan our bedroom makeover. The first thing we did is painted all the trim in the room white. Last year we had all of the molding in our home redone, but we haven't finished painting it all because honestly, painting trim sucks.

I found great curtains in a dark cocoa color with small copper dots at Target, and also purchased silver curtain rods that will match the drawer pulls on our new furniture. That's right -- we're getting new bedroom furniture! It's a great dark chocolate color which will be much warmer than the black IKEA set we have now. The furniture is coming on the 29th so now we have a hard deadline to finish up all the paint and get things ready.

Here's a couple pictures of what the furniture looks like:

My Dresser

Nightstands

We also bought a tall dresser for DH, but I couldn't find a picture of it. I was so happy to find this set -- and with 2 years of no-interest, no-payments financing we can space out our payments and this makes it really affordable!

I also picked out these linens from Nautica at Bed Bath and Beyond -- a bit of a splurge, but I had a 20% off coupon (courtesy of The Nest Magazine!) so it was well worth it.

The Linens

One of the things lacking from our home in general is art. This is mainly because art is just so darn expensive! I picked up a great tip from The Nest Magazine on some DIY fabric hanging kits and purchased this from Textile Arts for over the bed.

The Art

I'm thinking that I could use that coppery orange color that is in the art and hinted at in the curtains as an accent color for sheets or decorative pillows. I'm trying to mix patterns and styles a bit, but keep the overall color scheme consistent.

Next on our list is purchasing new lighting for the nightstands, and we are going to get a funky ceiling fan to keep us cool in the summer. I also want to get some kind of retro-looking alarm clock to replace the old digital one we have now and to keep the style of the room consistent.

This will be the first room of our house that I have actually re-done from top to bottom, really thinking about our purchases and the overall design of the room. I am so excited to put it all together and I'll be sure to update with before and after pictures when we're done!

re: Our Bedroom Makeover

I love the bed and bedding.  You'll sleep much better in this new sanctuary, I'm sure. Remember to post pictures of the finished project--show off your hard work in our DIY gallery.

I love the bedroom set as well!  Where is it from?  The dresser doesn't look to deep and would work well in our close quarters!  Definately post your finished product!

Wow, that's going to look great! I agree with Jen about sleeping better. I sleep so much better when our bedroom is uncluttered. Not easy when it's the size of a walk-in closet (seriously, barely enough room for a full sized bed and a dresser) but it helps tremendously.

re: Our Bedroom Makeover

We found the bedroom set at a local furniture store out in Port Jefferson Station (Long Island).  I'm not sure what brand it is -- I'll post more once we're done!

I agree about everything just feeling better when it is uncluttered.  I've been in "purge" mode -- just tossing or donating those things I don't really need anymore.

Do you make the bed every day?

Our bed is made every day, but I am not the one who actually makes it most of the time. DH is a super

re: Our Bedroom Makeover

Your art looks like my duvet cover (which I love) from CB2 - just slightly different shades but equally beautiful!
