What are you saving for?

The summer's almost over, and it's getting closer and closer to my move-in date. Although I have no space to put it in yet (I'm still on the epic apartment search...), I've been saving up over the summer for some new furniture to, well...furnish my new apartment. Maybe if I save enough to fill up this cute piggy bank I'll have enough for that bookcase from Ikea I've been eying.

Saving up my moolah in the summer seems harder than it is during the rest of the year. There's tons of spending temptation; frequent visits to the Dairy Queen (because it's just to hot to pass on ice cream), that cute sun dress that goes great with the hot weather, and, of course, those impromptu weekend beach trips. Forty dollars for gas, twenty for snacks to fill up the cooler, ten for parking, and a couple extra bucks for a margarita at the beach-side bar. Summer fun can really add up.

What have you and DH been saving up for this summer? How do you avoiding spending all your money on those summertime temptations?

re: What are you saving for?

We're currently saving for two big things; adoption costs for our child and a bathroom renovation.  How do we learn to say "no" to little temptations?  We keep focused on our goals.  It's easy for me to pass up a sundress or a margarita when I know that, as a result of our financial diligence, we'll be able to pay cash for both of these things.

re: What are you saving for?

Right now we're saving for a trip to Hawaii in February, but I think you're right when you said it's harder to save in the summer. My DH and I keep getting opportunities we cannot pass up or we won't pass up. With all the camping trips, and our anniversary being in the summer it seems like we won't make it to Hawaii next year.
