Cut off from Cable

Call off the search, I've finally found an apartment! It's officially mine as of 12:00 am this morning! Of course, I went over my price limit, but I figure I'll make up for it in other ways. The first cost cutter- going without cable.

Sure, I've got well over 100 DVD's  (I'm really a closeted film student who happily ended up in the publishing industry), but after watching Annie Hall for the 20th time and memorizing every single line of Sex and the City, I bet I'll be itching for cable. Maybe I'm over-reacting and won't even miss having cable, but then again, that's like saying I won't miss Rescue Me and What Not to Wear. Can one exist in a world void of Stacy and Clinton, Top Chef, and The Closer? Excuse my slight exaggeration, but would you be able to go without cable, or dare I say it...without TV?

See how one Nestie couple survived one year without the tube.

Could you handle turning off the cable? What shows would you miss the most, or should I say; which shows keep you from canceling the cable?

re: Cut off from Cable

No cable might not be so bad...you can watch lots of shows online now, even on your lunch break if high speed internet would be slashed to.

re: Cut off from Cable

I think the only time I would TRUELY miss having cable would be when I am home alone at times when my DH is at work in the evenings..... I like to have the white noise of TV (music just dosn't cut it for me and I have no clue why) I would miss watching Greys Anatomy, What not to Wear, and The Hills just to name a few.

we don't have cable. neither does my mom.  in fact I haven't had cable since I moved back home after living on campus in 2002. It's not so bad ;)

We don't have cable either. It isn't so bad--we still get the basics, and almost anything else is available for download on iTunes, which still ends up being cheaper than cable.

re: Cut off from Cable

I haven't had cable for over a year.  We invested in an HD Tuner and we get a good bunch of channels from it.  We also "splurged" on Blockbuster Online and we love that!  I think it's overrated although I do miss my guilty pleasue, Lifetime, once in a while.

re: Cut off from Cable

We don't have cable. Both DH and I grew up without it. I had it in college though and i could take it or leave it.  i had it my post college apt..not because I ordered it but because the cable man screwed up..and after repeat attempts to call the company..I just gave up. Two years of free cable:)

DH and I are just not big TV watchers. We're more into outdoor type things. To be honest, tv is so sad these days that I doubt I'd even miss our local channels. The only would be the local news and Two and a half men.

re: Cut off from Cable

We haven't had cable since we moved into our new house in May and being out in the country we dont get local channels either.  I miss Foodnetwork and TLC for me and for the kids I miss Disney on rainy days, but for the most part we get by just fine without it.

re: Cut off from Cable

I don't have cable now. I miss it and I don't. I know I'd watch WAY too much TV if I had it. I haven't had cable in probably 4 years--I would rather buy clothes! :)

re: Cut off from Cable

My husband and I lived in Austria from January - August of this year.   In our apartment over there, we had only basic cable, but that was in German.  All we had in English was CNN International and BBC Prime.  Niether of those replaced the Food Network or TLC for me or ESPN for him.   We did find that we spent an awful lot on buying seasons passes on iTunes for our favorite shows.  There was nothing like  Netflix over there so we rented a movie a few times a month, but not that often.

I think honestly we REALLY missed cable because since we got back to the US and while we are looking for jobs, we have been watching way more TV than we did before we left in January.    Its actually kind of gross.

Good luck with your new no cable lifestyle, it may inspire a new hobby.  If you hone your baking skills maybe you can use what you bake as leverage when you invite yourself to other peoples apartments to watch your favorite shows!
