Guilt-free Chocolate!
I’ve always been a huge chocolate addict, and used to be totally indiscriminate about which type of chocolate I’d gobble up. Sure, I loved Teuscher and Vosges, but I’d also happily eat any mass-produced candy I could pick up at a newsstand or supermarket checkout aisle. But now that I’m trying to only eat organic food (that’s the goal anyway, though issues of convenience and self-control often make it impossible) I’ve had to become more discriminating in my chocolate consumption.
Cocoa is second only to cotton as one of the world’s most pesticide intensive crops, so choosing organic bars and bon-bons is a must if you care about your health or the environment.
Only problem is, I often don’t think organic chocolate tastes as good as the non-organic kind! Luckily, there are at least two organic brands that do meet my obsessive chocoholic standards!
Green & Black’s and Dagoba are both widely available and totally delish (and come in a variety of flavors and cocoa percentages, in case you like to mix it up).
My absolute favorite chocolate on the planet isn’t organic, sadly, but it is socially responsible so I give it a pass. It’s a boutique brand made in Philadelphia called John and Kira’s, and if you’re mad for chocolate and haven’t discovered it yet you should definitely give it a try. They source ingredients from sustainable farms where workers are paid a living wage, and have helped set up garden programs in inner city schools to grow the mint for their divine mint-laced chocolates.
What’s your favorite brand of chocolate?
