What's Your Turkey Day Tradition?
We're spending Thanksgiving together without family this year. We had planned to go to his parents' house, but they're going their separate ways and my parents are leaving town too.
So it's up to us to cook dinner and make it special. Since it's a holiday that centers around good food, we're going to get a small turkey and cook (most) everything from scratch, especially the cranberry sauce.
Aside from great grub, we also want to start a Thanksgiving tradition. A few ideas we've come up with: a nice jog in the park before dinner; board games after dinner; and bundling up to the Macy's day parade. Although they all sounded fun, none of them clicked.
The winning idea came to us when we recently met a couple we know who just moved to New York City. They're just barely on their feet, and don't have a place to go for the holidays. We decided that even though we've only just met, we're going to reach out and invite them over to share dinner with us. Perhaps it'll be our Thanksgiving tradition -- the act of inviting those we're not as close to and spending it with them.
Have any of you been in a similar situation? What do you do for Thanksgiving that makes it feel so special?
