Easy Entertaining Tips

I'm convinced I inherited a love of entertaining from my parents -- you know, the types that hosted the pre-prom picture-taking party? Growing up around all the gatherings, I watched, helped, and learned a thing or two about pulling off a great party. Here, a list of five tips I learned from the pros (mom and dad that is).

1. Set the table first. Giving yourself plenty of time with the table will ensure that you have enough utensils and dinnerware.

2. Split up pre-party tasks. The best parties happen when everyone chips in. Tackle the kitchen together (one of you chops, while the other cooks), and do the same with the cleaning (someone picks up, while the other cleans).

3. Plan out the music. My parents used CDs, and now we download our tunes. Either way, music is one of the best ways to set the mood. We like something indie (try Stereolab) for a laid-back gathering of friends.

4. Seating should be somewhat though-out. Use place cards or casually point your guests to a spot. Note: Spread the type As out so that one end of the table doesn't dominate.

5. Fake cleaning is a-okay, save the bathroom. So maybe your clothes aren't all hung up in the closet -- no big deal -- just make sure to take the extra time and effort to scrub down the one place that everyone will visit. (Get bathroom-cleaning tips here.)
